As Pitchpaw is apprenticed to Snailstripe, she hopes that she'll get to do something that will impress the clan as her first day as an apprentice. Such excitement in her young mind causes her to make some... irrational decisions. She and Bluepaw run off in the direction of the Coverclan border, eager to prove themselves. Pitchpaw returns with a torn ear and a tummy ache. Bluepaw returns with a migraine.
Scorchtrail finds a kittypet loitering near the Poolclan-Coverclan border. He calmly introduces himself as Neptune, explaining that his twolegs disappeared one day and never returned. He is brought back to the clan and offered a place to stay, as well as a new name: Neptunetwist.
The apprentices are eager to meet Neptunetwist, and gather up items to formally introduce him to Poolclan. However, Barnaclepaw starts a fight with Pitchpaw during the process.
A small dog gets loose near some of the tall rocks, leaving Chitonchaser and Sculpinspots to herd it away. All they do is excite it more, and are forced to scale the rocks and wait, exasperated, for the mongrel's twolegs to take it home.
Chitonchaser informs the clan's healer, Ochreears, that she had a vision while hunting by herself along the shore. They discuss it together. After a long walk, they depart, frustrated from being unable to divine the vision's vague meaning.
