Kaijune 2021: Pacific Rim
I've been drawing neon kaiju all month and I forgot to post it here, whoops. Might as well put them in three big posts now that I've finished doing them.
First batch: the wonderful kaiju of Pacific Rim.
So a thing about kaiju in Pacific Rim is, they do not actually have each and every action micromanaged by the Precursors. They actually have a fair amount of autonomy, and do not (at least exclusively) rely on the hivemind to coordinate with each other. This is evidenced in the scene where Striker Eureka fights and injures Slattern. Slattern pulls back and yells. Scunner hears Slattern’s cry, and goes over to help him. If the kaiju were solely reliant on the hivemind for coordination, this would not be necessary; either the Precursors could just make Scunner go and help Slattern; or Slattern could communicate with Scunner telepathically. But this isn’t what happens; Slattern vocally yells for help. I think this could indicate that the “hivemind” is not actually some all-encompassing monolith, so much as a bunch of dudes mentally hooked up together. Of course there’s probably not a lot of diversity of thought within it right now, but that doesn’t mean that those who are within don’t have the capacity for individual thought. This is not to say that I necessarily think they could all be talked out of their plans of xenoforming/future terraforming Earth, but that their behavior does not require some kind of alien psychology to justify or explain it. I also think that it means that the kaiju’s behavior needs a closer look than “oh well they’re just controlled, so...” I mean, with the degree of autonomy they have, what’s stopping them from just hecking off and doing whatever once they hit Earth? Are they under duress, perhaps told that their immortal souls will be in peril if they don’t do as they’re told, or that they’ll be hunted down and punished if they renegade? Are they engineered to have very low self-preservation instinct? Or, considering how skinny they look (seriously, they have that whole shrinkwrapped look), are they are starving and desperate for anything they can eat? Things to ponder.
