The Oldest Scutcher in Ireland. Belfast used to be known as Linenopolis as it was the biggest manufacturer of linen in the world. Eugene McConville’s family owned a water-powered scutch mill, which is now a museum. A scutcher is someone who would separate the fibre that would later become linen from the flax plant. Eugene is one of the few remaining scutchers in Ireland.
