After the Battle

More King Arthur fic because I'm IN THE TRENCHES (Have written 2k words in the last week. This literally has never happened before. Help??)

Anyway this is part of a larger thing which is not done yet but I need to flail a bit so here's a sneak peak!! (under read more) Context: end of movie, slight AU, Lancelot and Tristan live :))

It is some time later, when the battle has truly been decided and the surviving Saxons driven off or captured, that Arthur finds them. His expression is stricken as he sees Lancelot lying still in her arms and he collapses to his knees beside them.

“Please, God, no.” He sounds on the verge of tears. “Not this.”

“He lives.” Guinevere reassures him. “But he needs aid, and I could not move him myself.”

Arthur reaches out to touch Lancelot’s face with so much gentleness that Guinevere again wonders how she could ever have missed the bond between them. Lancelot stirs under the touch, but does not open his eyes. He has grown feverish and sweaty as they have waited on the field and she fears that if he is not tended to soon, he may not make it. Clearly coming to the same conclusion that she has, Arthur flashes her a concerned glance and then slips his arms beneath Lancelot’s shoulders and knees and lifts him, only staggering briefly under the other man’s weight. Guinevere rises stiffly as well; her body is beginning to feel the strain of the battle and her arms and legs—not to mention her head—throb with aches. She picks up Lancelot’s twin swords and retrieves her own from the dead Saxon’s body and follows Arthur as he slowly makes his way back to the fort. 

They are joined along the way by the other knights: Gawain, who is favoring his left arm and leaning on Galahad, who seems mostly unharmed; sturdy Bors is covered in blood and scrapes but standing tall and supporting Tristan, who looks half-dead himself. They have all made it, and Guinevere is glad—although she does not yet know them well. In the kingdom she and Arthur will build, they will be invaluable allies, but for now, they must tend to their wounded.

Guinevere is not quite sure what to make of Lancelot yet. Arthur she can read like clear water, he wears his heart in his eyes and every action he takes is for the good of his men and the honor code he has sworn himself to. It is almost endearing how much he believes that the world is just and kind even when he has seen so much evidence to the contrary. Lancelot though… she thinks Lancelot is perhaps more like her: jaded and all too aware of the ways of the world. If Arthur is clear water, then Lancelot is more like cloudy ice—cold, opaque, and rigid. But ice can be broken, and she will find out how to break Lancelot sooner or later. With her, it's only a matter of time.

I hope everyone enjoys this snippet from the next chapter of Thawed Hearts which is coming along slowly but surely!! I am in deadline hell at the moment but I've got about 2/3 of it written and am hoping to finish it once I'm free later this month :D (it's full of angst, I'm so sorry)

“I can see why.” Steve said. He sighed. “I just don’t know how to step off the pedestal. It’s not me that anyone remembers; they assume the soldier is me and they expect me to act one way because of his reputation from all the propaganda campaigns.” “I hope we at the Institute have never made you feel like that.” Ororo put a hand on his shoulder. He shook his head. “No, not you. The kids though… I mean, Rogue was scared to speak to me because she thought I’d be like the boys at her school who idolize me—and that’s not her fault, obviously—but it has made me worry about what kind of legacy I’ve left. Did I really do any good if the people who rally behind my image are the same sort of people as the ones I was fighting. I mean really—football players who pressure girls and bully mutants for being different?” He scoffed. “What was it all for if the world is still full of this mindless hate?” At his side Ororo was silent, but her hand still rested on his shoulder, providing some small comfort.  “We cannot choose our legacies,” she said at last, “because they are always written by those in power. The masses remember you as the Soldier because that is how the military wanted you to be remembered, just as the head shaman made sure the Bakunto tribe remembered me as an all-powerful goddess instead of the uncertain teenager that I was. You can never predict who will be in power in the future, so you must focus on living in the present and making the best choices you can at any given moment.”

ohhhh yes I'd love to write something for them!! Inspiration hasn't really struck (tolkien fic is hard for me) but here's a couple lines that popped into my head!

Celebrían knows her husband doesn't sleep well, especially on winter nights when the darkness creeps into every corner. When she wakes (as she so often does) and the bed beside her is cold, she brings him tea in the library and sits with him for as long as he wants her there. She wishes she could drive the darkness away from him forever, but since she cannot, she settles for holding up a candle against it.

------- *flailing* I FINISHED A NAT FIC!!! @natasharomanoffweek inspired me to finally get it in gear and finish this draft I’ve been picking away at since 2023. This thing was SUPPOSED to be a quick fun project to warm me up for my actual big ideas, but then it kind of got out of hand and it’s 7k words now. Oops. Enjoy? This is for the day 5 prompts ‘for the mission’ and ‘undercover’, but it is unfortunately late because I’ve had a HECTIC three days. Ah well, I got it done and that’s the important part.
