Season 13 so far [13x11]
Okay so season 12 is not on great standing with me. I loved how it started out, with the return of Mary and her issues with the boys being grown-up and hunters. I *thought* I understood how the BMOL works too, and while I disagree, I can see why Mary and Sam decided to join them. (Well, I’m bitter they lied to Dean, AGAIN, but anyway). Even initially the baby storyline was not as stupid as it could be - I thought that was lame, and did not like Rick’s version of Lucifer, but fine. Things started going downhill when out of the blue the BMOL decided on brainwashing and genocide, then Crowley decided on being stupid, then the Deus ex machina way Lucifer is freed, then the 180 turn when Cas decided to protect the Nephilim (like what??).
HOWEVER,
Their saving point was basically killing everyone in the season finale. The way all the characters died was dumb, the lead-up to the deaths was dumb (aka the writing was dumb) but the fact that they all died/trapped in AU was great for more storytelling. We get to understand the grief, and the priorities of the Winchesters.
I think by 13x11, it was pretty clear that the brothers, no matter how much they like to think themselves as a unit, could not be any more different. In the first half we got to see Dean’s grief more clearly. At first I disliked how Sam was made to be all understanding and thought that was a great disservice to his feelings. Alas, I was happy to be wrong. Dean thought, hell, he said he “lost everything”. I might be wearing shipper goggles, but the highest thing on Dean’s list is Cas. The nice thing about list is that it comes with order. There is inherently a priority. Cas always tops Dean’s list of people they lost. So Dean spiralled, and boyy did he spiral.
Sam though, did not believe he lost everything. He still has Jack, initally a deus ex machina to get to the alternate universe, then someone he sees himself in, and sort of an adopted child. He believed his mother was alive (inside knowledge of Lucifer’s ways? ugh I shudder to think) and they (D,S,J) can reach her. So he still faced loss, Cas was a friend, Kelly was an innocent and a victim, maybeeee Crowley (but I don’t think there were any love lost there). But, there is a valid reason we do not get to see it emphasised, because ultimately, Sam still has hope.
Cue 13x05 then 13x9-10. Everything else crashed and burned, but Cas is back!
And now in 13x11 we started seeing Sam down in his spiral. His mom is still lost, and now his adopted child is trapped in a hostile environment (AU apocalypse certainly was no sunshine, plus angel-killing bullets, Lucifer, whoever tortured Mary as far as Sam knows). And another innocent died. Sam just lost the top of his list, and tons other too just to rub the salt in. It is no wonder Sam started spiralling. But Dean? The poster boy for “I’m gonna die at the edge of blade”? He’s not “broken-up” anymore. He looked on disapproving when Sam nearly repeated his fave mantra word-for-word.
Final thoughts: Dean’s list is Cas, Mary, Crowley. Sam’s list is Mary, Cas, Jack.
All of them are important to the boys in their own way, and I was hesitant to put them in a list and make it sound like they belong in the same category of love - they are not. But then, the show already did that.
Dean: “You’re going to bring back Cas, you’re going to bring back mom, you’re are going to bring ‘em all back. All of ‘em. Even Crowley.”
Sam: “And I tried to pretend we could have mom back, and Cas, and-and help Jack.”
This season had a strong focus on family, both adoptive and found.
But, it was rather anticlimactic that Emerald’s mum ended up being an ordinary person, rather than an alien. So, the hope has to be that her father is something very unearthly.
