Dandruff is a common scalp condition that causes flaky skin to appear in the hair. It is often accompanied by itching and irritation. The condition occurs when the scalp sheds excess dead skin cells.

Dandruff consists of small, white or yellowish flakes of dead skin that shed from the scalp. It can be caused by factors such as dry skin, oily scalp, fungal overgrowth (Malassezia), sensitivity to hair products, or underlying skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.

The sebaceous glands are responsible for producing sebum (natural oil) in the scalp. When these glands produce too much or too little oil, it can contribute to dandruff. Excessive oil can lead to fungal growth, while dryness can cause flaking.
