i've wanted to post something about his for a while, but finding the words to articulate just how painful and impactful it all has been has been difficult.
i just want to remind everyone that these children in the unmarked graves across canada (and the us) are NOT just our ancestors. they are our grandparents, mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles, our brothers and sisters and our cousins. my grandfather's siblings attended the kamloops residential school and he never heard from them or saw them again. his mother's pain and trauma from attending that school has affected my immediate family. these schools aren't before our time. the gordon indian residential school was in operation when i was in elementary school. this is not old news. and only now are people talking about it and acknowledging what happened to these children. only now they are listening to first hand stories of immense pain and trauma. canada was literally built on the backs of native children.
... and a small voice whispers, "they found us." 🧡🧡🧡
Dick said the protesters speak for all Secwépemc people, arguing their lands cannot be surrendered or ceded by anyone.
Secwépemc protesters have settled in for the long haul in a bid to stop the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project from being completed in Kamloops.
On Saturday (Oct. 3), a group of about 20 people set up what they call a permanent camp along the shores of the Thompson River, off Mission Flats Road and near a pipeline worksite.
The encampment is located in the same area where a Secwépemc man held a vision quest and fast in protest of the pipeline at the end of August.
Miranda Dick, a spokesperson for the camp, told KTW the sole goal of the encampment is to stop the pipeline twinning project.
Asked what protesters are prepared to do to achieve that, Dick replied: “Everything.”

Indigenous jurisdiction is collectively held. This means the deals Kinder Morgan has made with individual bands do not replace the need for engagement with the nation as a collective, as the proper title and rights holder on a territorial basis. Canada now bears the risks from the company's failure to obtain consent from the appropriate jurisdictional authority. They are now the ones operating illegally, not the Indigenous land defenders. https://www.secwepemculecw.org/act-of-war
