OH MY GOD!!! JASPER’S CHAPTER WAS AWESOME!!!
We got a lot of lore about the family!!! Obviously this has spoilers for the chapter.
From the opening, this’s Caroline and Marley’s other daughter Jean. Jasper looks more like Caroline and Jean looks more like Marley. Based from the text sent from Caroline to Jean, around a year before this chapter happens. it’s apparent Caroline and Marley weren’t in a happy marriage between them. Or at least towards the end and she decided to leave because it wasn’t safe anymore.
She says she couldn’t keep pretending, so this implies that she was either helping Marley with the first few murders and then couldn’t take it anymore. Or more likely she was just at home knowing Marley was murdering people. Tried to play along. Reasonably got scared he may one day hurt her or their kids. Couldn’t take it anymore and left. Interesting to note she also told Jean not to tell Jasper about this.
We also learn Jean was captain of the football team Jasper got kicked off of. It seems there’s bad blood between them as Jasper wanted to be on the team and says she was going to make it to finals. Which Jean says she wouldn’t because she couldn’t take a tackle. Which based off of the scars on Jaspers limbs, Jean seems to be right about that. They may be scars from football injuries.
Jean also compares Jasper to their dad and Jasper seemingly is proud of that and how she’s found Jean. This could imply Jasper was much closer to Marley than she was with Caroline. Or at least wanted to live up Marley’s expectations if he wanted both kids to play football.
Then here we get the line I talked about prior about Jasper saying Jean’s a bigger disappointment than her. This implies that Marley didn’t take Caroline and Jean leaving well. And Jasper getting kicked off the team. Which Jasper seems to be aware of.
But this is where the text comes back into it, as Caroline told Jean not to tell Jasper. And you’d think if she was that scared, she’d want Jasper away from her delusional husband. I know Jasper is 21 and was an adult when Caroline left, and making her own decisions. But you’d think she’d be at least a little concerned about the impact Marley had on Jasper. Unless Caroline considered Jasper too far gone and just wanted Jean to be safe.
Jasper also mentions her view that Jean got her kicked off the team as a reminder of what happened back at home. And how that they tried to get away from it (assuming that’s Marley) and how Jean’s on the floor scared now which Jasper says “did she teach ya that too?” Heavily implying that Marley was the one that killed Caroline.
Jean here mentions Jasper’s such a hermit she doesn’t know their dad is dead. Which heavily implies the entire family split apart, with Marley murdering out of delusion and Jasper hiding out in the cabin murdering her former teammates. Hopefully to get his attention again.
Also Jasper has a talent for chemistry by the looks of things.
From these panels, again we can assume Marley didn’t take Jasper getting kicked off the team well. And could also imply that if Jasper was closer to her dad to begin with, she was even more desperate to live up to his expectations. And really missed him.
