Did someone imagine 1400 years ago, when a convent was built beside the Thames, that the building would become Southwark Cathedral? Did someone imagine, when the cathedral was built in 1897, that it would still be in use over 100 years later? It definitely took imagination to design the impressive, modern, wrap-around extention to the cathedral, which was my classroom for the past week. Whatever you can imagine, you can create. A ship at sea for many years picks up thousands of barnacles that attach themselves to the bottom of the ship and eventually weight it down, becoming a threat to its safety. The easiest way to get rid of them is for the ship to harbour in a fresh water port, free of salt water. Here, the barnacles loosen on their own and fall off. The ship is then able to return to sea, relieved of its burden. So!
