the mourning and the dove

“Look at me, dear. No, no -- me, up here.”
Edeline knelt to the dusty wooden floor, wiping sweat off of her forehead before pulling back her hood. it wasn’t much white anymore, the grime had spoiled it in varying shades of red, coal black, and brown. she reached to her waist, popping open a small flask. “Open up,” she tilted the contents of the flask into the soldier’s mouth, supporting the back of their head with her elbow. “It’s nice, right? Caramel whiskey -- don’t ask me where I got it, okay? It’s our secret.” she smiled, smoothing out her patient’s hair. “I’m gonna put a cold cloth over your eyes, don’t move it.” she tipped a bottle out onto a towel, wrapping it snugly over the soldier’s eyes. “Shh...”
standing slowly, she stepped quietly away -- she didn’t dare make much noise, they’d only narrowly escaped a titan’s grip not more than a few hundred feet away. the sunset poured in through the broken windows, illuminating the dust motes and dirt falling from the high ceiling. it must have been a church. wasn’t much to pray for here. unholy moments were an everyday occurrence now.
“Eld --” she whispered, stepping up to the blond man’s side. “He’s not going to make it unless I amputate his legs. There’s... there’s not much left, and it’s only going to get infected. We don’t have a lot of time, and if we bring him back to the hospital, and you know they’re just going to throw him out.”
she wished they weren’t here.
better times weren't so long gone, were they?
but they had a job to do.
“I need one of your blades, Eld.”

Edie bounced up on the tips of her toes, fingers clasping at the edge of her pale sky blue dress — an old hand-me-down from a cousin within Wall Sheena, though beautiful nonetheless. as soon as the barkeep shifted toward her, she took the two drinks she’d ordered, leaving a tip behind. they’d deserve it, after all — the garrison and the survey corps weren’t lazy partygoers. weaving in throughout the crowd, she politely nodded her head at anyone who recognised her — it was good to be reminded of the survivors. tonight wasn’t a night for sorrow and pity.
“See, I told y’a, the one in the black shirt is pouring doubles when y’ask him for singles. You’re welcome,” she chided gently, sliding his drink over to him. “Cheers, Eld!” a smile spread across her lips, red tinted and parted in joy. “I’m so glad we’re here.”

oh, if she believed in god, how much she would have prayed — would any god listen to one of its own, fallen?
Make me forget.
some nights had been unbearable. she wouldn’t disallow him the comfort of ignorance, even if just for a few hours.
perfect cream skin that had once been relatively free of scars now was painted fully in pink lines, faults of fights she could no longer summon the nurse for. traveling what remained of the world was equally cathartic and vicious, spending nights alone floating at sea only to return to violence on land. it wasn’t surprising, only terribly saddening that hate still bubbled up through the cracks of flattened earth. nevertheless, she had found her safe port in arms she thought she’d never feel around her again.
“ you should lay down. ” @seggr, from HERE.
DULLED OBSIDIAN EYES PAN UPWARD. the captain sways on his feet for a moment before snapping himself back to attention, then he offers his second—in—command a dismissive little wave of his hand. it’s just a little head wound, all bandaged & treated, nothing he hasn’t dealt with before. damn it, why is his vision so fuzzy?
he COUGHS. if he tastes iron, he doesn’t tell eld. the underground still haunts him, even now.
“ we’ve got drills to practice & shit to—— ” again he sways, that hand pressing over his eyes as the nausea starts to creep in. “ ... to do. get the others. ”
“ we’re in this together. ”

the stars were so much closer — carried on the edges of intoxication, she tip toed, spinning, though, never too close to the edge. she’d already made his brackish eyes go wide once. other soldiers made small talk over their drinks, raucous laughter pouring out into the night air. some huddled close, pointing out shapes in the sky above, be it clouds or constellations. she even caught sight of Levi giving an amused stare at a few of the particularly drunk scouts. Edeline led a round of drinking songs, her conducting fanciful, if not completely wrong — at least she was in tune ( more than could be said for most of the soldiers ).
lithe but strong hands took scarred palms, lifting him from the stool he’d been watching her from. she whisked him away down length of the wall, the sky rotating around them as if it were the one dancing for an audience. she sang softly all the way, letting it roll down either side: tales of love and the taste of drink and the ocean blue. once she stopped, she spun on her heel to face him. “Eld Gin,” she mused, his name always a welcome taste on her tongue. “I hope y’ready for me t’hold your hand ‘till the end of t i m e !” Edeline sang, robin egg hued eyes finding hazel. “Will y’take my offer?” she knelt, offering arms open wide, cheeks flushed and white hair flowing in the evening wind.
it didn’t take her long for her cheeks to deepen in tone when he knelt down, still about a head above her. the kiss was a storybook kind, hands on warm skin, broken only for smiles and easily blown on the wind laughter.
We’re in this together ——————— “We better be, Gin, I promised that t’ya already, an’I trust y’not goin’ anywhere soon.” oh, that s m i l e — she’d wear it forever, just for him.

It was a shock to all of them when Hange’s wires had snapped, and they fell through the trees, body hitting each branch on the way down with full force. Thankfully, they were caught before hitting the ground, but that didn’t lessen the pain they had felt. The lot of them went back to the castle located on the outer area of Wall Rose. Hange had asked her comrades to leave them be for the time being, in order to recollect their thoughts. Something like this hasn’t happened in years, not since their training corp days.
Hange fell victim to having bruised ribs, thankfully nothing worse, but it still hurt like hell, yet it wasn’t something they couldn’t get over. They hear another’s voice behind the door, Hange listens carefully, yet decides to be a bit funny with their response. Fist balls up and their knuckles meet with the door, one knock. In a total of sixteen seconds there comes a second knock, then, about thirty-seven seconds later came a constant banging, followed by Hange’s guffawing.
❝ Eld! It’ll take more than a bunch of trees to take me out! ❞

“Gin!” The Squad Captain responded too late when a green blur threw itself between Hange and the jaws of an incoming titan.
Hange had a reputation on the battlefield for being too careless, allowing Titans to get within grabbing distance before thinking about swinging their blades and defending themselves. It wasn’t accurate to say the brunette enjoyed the thrill of getting as close to the lion’s fans as possible and coming out unscathed.
This time nearly cost them, however, and even as Hange was shoved out of the way they fired a line and swung back around just as they spotted the blonde raising their blades and slicing through Titan flesh.
“Gin! Are you alright?” they asked, swinging down to join Eld in the treeline. “Those were some fast reflexes, thank you.”
