The poor presence of vestiges of the medieval village is due to the continuous earthquakes and to many reconstructions (in 1694 it was nearly destroyed), but Potenza maintains a dignitous old town that lays on the edge of the long Pretoria road (from Largo Portasalza at Torre Guevara), city walk. Potenza was historically an enemy of Rome, until it became a colony and later was often in the midst of historical changes, between Normans, Swabians and Angevins, and in the modern age the Aragonese. During the revolutionary period it became the capital instead of Matera.
