Just thinking about some more Janeway and Chakotay stuff, especially regarding their sisters.

(a lot of the following is from beta canon, obviously)

They're both part of a pair of siblings who are pretty different from one another, and both sets of siblings have the following in common:

One sibling grew up doing what was expected of them (Kathryn became a scientist and a Starfleet officer, Sekaya immersed herself in her people's culture and traditions and later became a shaman)

One sibling grew up rebellious and at odds with their family (Chakotay took this to an extreme and joined Starfleet after completely rejecting his culture, while Phoebe took this to a lesser extreme and became an artist.)

One sibling appears to have been largely unattached throughout life (Chakotay doesn't appear to have ever had a particularly serious relationship, and I don't think there's ever been a mention of Phoebe having a partner until the new Janeway biography was released (and I tend to ignore that book)).

But the other sibling has had serious relationships that have ended in tragedy (Kathryn lost Justin in the same crash that killed her father, before losing her relationship with Mark thanks to Voyager. Sekaya meanwhile, lost her childhood sweetheart - Blue Water Dreamer - when he was murdered by Crell Moset)

Both sets of siblings have had conflicts based on their differing outlooks with Chakotay and Sekaya being out of touch for years at one point, and Kathryn and Phoebe never seeing eye to eye on much of anything.

Both sets of siblings appear to have reconciled somewhat following the deaths of their fathers. Phoebe helped Kathryn overcome crippling depression following Edward Janeway's death, while Chakotay returned home and began to follow his peoples' traditions after Kolopak's death.

Chakotay Hedacnon (AU)

Chakotay comes from the Yurok tribe which was native to Northern California by the Klamath River.

the right to use specific areas for fishing, hunting, and gathering, generally belonged to particular houses.

The traditional Yurok economy focused on salmon and acorns.

Wealth was counted in strings of dentalium shells, obsidian blades, woodpecker scalps, and albino deerskins. Acquiring wealth was an important goal in Yurok culture. 

Traditional Yurok religion was concerned with an individual’s effort to elicit supernatural aid, especially through ritual cleanliness, and with rituals for the public welfare

 The spiritual power to cure disease was granted only to women, giving these shamans prestige and a source of wealth (see also shamanism).

(Update :I searched for a tried that has facial tattoos that wasn't Inuit and build homes from wood and I found them! I hate how his tribe isn't even named in the show, let alone REAL, 😂 but this is the CLOSEST I could get. and I'm not a purist trek fan so I can have characters change for the better and be okay with that. but it keeps in line with wood building skill he has, )

Fic: Roots

How long has it been since we’ve seen each other in person? Has it been a full eight years? That can’t be right. Does it just feel that long because of the war? When was the last time he was home?

The crew each get three minutes to talk to their loved ones during “Author, Author”. Here is my take on how the conversation between Chakotay and his sister went. I am also heavily inspired by Christie Golden’s “Spirit Walk Book One - Old Wounds”, which is this month’s reading for the @voyager-book-club

Quick headcanon backstory on them to give context to the art: they're 8 years apart, so chakotay left home when she was 7. They were super close before he left, and it devastated sekaya when he did. Though initially this impacted her quite negatively, she was able to find support in the community. She grows up to find interest in linguistics and grows a strong desire to pursue it academically. Chakotay and sekaya meet again only 1 other time (when he was in the Academy) before they meet again when chakotay returns home for their grandfather's death. He his roughly 28, and she 20. It's a rough meet up as they don't know how to speak to each other anymore. They semi patch things up before he leaves again. A few years later chakotay is at his shore duty command in san Diego and at this time sekaya finally decides to attend college on earth. She lives with him in his apartment, and they spend 4 years bonding, arguing, and learning each other :3

This is like surface level of what I had in mind but hopefully it's not too long ❤️
