Have you ever been to a zero-waste store? I used to work at one and I’m always amazed by the designs and number of options for plastic-free items. Last month when I was in Edinburgh, I got to visit @theecolarder and toured around their place, full of bulk plastic-free foods and products. They also operate as a community space featuring events like yoga and clothing swaps. ♻️ 🌎🌈 One of the biggest issues for people buying at zero-waste stores was when the pandemic hit and people were mass hoarding supplies. There was also some distrust toward these stores because people didn’t want to get sick when touching the food (bulk containers). A lot of people ask, "Why are zero waste products so expensive?" and the truth is that when you look beyond fancy products, basic supplies are often available at competitive prices, and buying zero-waste is investing in a more sustainable system that cherishes labor, land, and ethics. Should there be a push for more accessible and affordable products? Yes! The United States has seen some increases of new zero waste stores opening in person or online, which makes me wonder: are we truly headed for conscious consumerism?
