Breath Styles! (Simplified)
Hello everyone! I've decided to make this post about breaths! This is more so for me so I can put all the info I've researched into one place! If anyone else finds this useful than great!
Also note I have this info also on Amino! The reception was there was pretty positive. So i wanted to post it to other platforms! :)
Breaths focus on using swordsmanship in their attacks.
Humans do not have supernatural powers. Demons on the other had do. So that humans don't get killed off so quickly they use breaths. Breaths is the process of increasing one's physical abilities to be on par with a demons.
Note: I know Genya can be used as an exception about supernatural abilities. We just don't know enough about his ability.
The anime and manga use visual flair to show off the different breath techniques. Making it seem like they have supernatural abilities (thats what I thought too!) That is not actually the case, they just usual visual flair! It would be boring to just see the swords slashing so gotta make it pretty!
Tanjirou for example: when he uses his breath techniques his visual flair is water! This is just to emphasize his movements! Water breath techniques focus on flexibility, hence why whenever Tanjirou uses it we see water. It's not like Tanjirou is actually using water during his attacks. It's all about how he moves and his slashes.

Edit: updated chart 12/13/19
"All current breaths originate from Breath of the Sun. Which only one person is shown to be able to use. It is possible to create breaths that branch out from the original 5 breaths. Some breaths are not available for just anyone. "Breath of Flames" is only kept within the Rengoku family. " - Quote from Jadeologie on curiouscat!
Note: It has been confirmed from the mangaka Gotōge that there is no branches from stone.
Some Breath Branches make no sense!
That I understand completely! Like the one that surprised me the most is Breath of Love and Breath of Serpent!
I think the easiest way to figure out breath branches in general is to break down their movements. Not so much the element! This is how I personally do it so you do you if you don't agree!
Breath of Water: Flexible movements.
- So it makes sense with Serpent and Flowers even insects!
Breath of Flames: Strong Offensive Movements
Breath of Stone: Strong Defensive Movements
Breath of Wind: Quick Multiple Movements
Breath of Thunder/Lightning: Quick Movements
I think once you figure out how breaths work you can easily develop your own! Along with what breath they branch from! I do think it's important to figure out what branch your original breath comes from! Since I think it would help develop the different forms of attack. Just remember to break down the movements to see what branch.
Another tip I got was to work in reverse! Figure what movements are similar to what you want from the main 5! Then start branching from there! :)
With that done then you can easily figure out the different forms! :)
My advice is after you picked your own breath style, the next step would be to figure out what branch it comes off of! Then imagine the types of movements it entails!
An example: Breath of Cloud branches from Breath of Water.
Movements are flexible and graceful almost like a dancer.
