In late winter the clump-forming evergreen Helleborus foetidus (stinking hellebore, bearfoot, ox heel, setterwort, stinkwort) starts to flower. This is a woodland native in the U.K. and will cope with a shaded location. It is a shortlived perennial but tends to self seed so young plants appear nearby.

What’s this jumble of plants growing near my nasturtiums? It’s curly parsley that’s going to seed. Weird and wonderful, yes? Especially if you like curly parsley.
In my planter, portulaca never disappoint!!

The Big Bed, aka the raised bed built into the lawn. This used to be a few feet longer but I took off the end that became permanently shaded by the new taller house going up next door.
I did another weeding pass, this time deciding to take out the blooming brassica and a bunch of carrots at the northernmost end. I am leaving two really big, second-year carrots to go to seed. I pulled a lot of seedshot from the shadier end and a bunch of raspberry runners.
This bed has such a weird mix of veggies and herbs going on, I allow a lot of stuff here to self-seed and naturalize. After having bajillion borage in here last year, I’m not seeding it and waiting to see how much I get. There are good signs of having more red orrach this year. The chard is doing great. I’m going to try leaving one of each color variation to run to seed and eat/use the rest.
The garlic is in good shape. It’s a hardneck. That will go to the summer solstice at least. I have thinned the Somnifera poppies twice, and they are the plants which have clearly responded to the couple of waterings the most. I’ve also thinned the California poppies as those have a tendency to over-proliferate. Now that I have the edge beds in much better shape, I’d like to work to get the CA poppies out of the veggie bed and into the edges of the yard more.
And I netted the big bed because I’ve now confirmed Lily, the floofy girl cat from one street over, is my rogue garden pooper. Oy....
