Whelp, it happened, I started summer seeds in January.
BUT-! I have a good reason! I know now that I will be away from my home for the first two-ish weeks of March this year, which is when I would need to be potting-up most of my seedlings if I followed my normal schedule of seed-starting. So in anticipation of that, I started my tomatoes last night. Hopefully they will now sprout and put on their first true leaves, and thus be big enough to pot-up, before I leave.
(and thus they will be much easier to ask my non-gardener housemates to care for in my absence. I hope watering every morning and turning the grow lights on and off everyday won't be too hard for them to accomplish. Lord knows I've messed it up myself a few times, and I love tending my plants. May the promise of yummy tomatoes this year help motivate them.)
What good luck! I found a morning glory growing on a curb near my home. I walked into my yard and found sweet potato flowers.
One last feast to celebrate Autumn
Extra spicy fried green tomatoes.
Bee Hug! <3
This week I tagged my backyard monarchs. A group I volunteer with trains folks to tag, and I received my tags from them. The tags don't hurt the butterflies and they can be recovered and recorded once they arrive at their final destination after migration. Some make it all the way to Mexico!
If you are interested in being part of this citizen science project, you can learn all about it at monarchwatch.org/tagging. You can even buy some cool swag to show your support for environmental stewardship and pollinator power!
The website is a great resource and describe the process, with helpful pictures! Below is one of my tagged monarchs happily chillin' in my backyard.
premiere shot of narrow leaf zinnias, backyard, with a recently acquired pentax k1000. provia 100, hand-held, no filter.
so this is from the first roll i shot with a new camera - “new camera” as in “new camera to me” - a pentax k1000. manufactured from 1976-1997, the k1000 is probably one of the simplest, most direct slr’s one can use: there are only three controls to manage - focus, shutter speed, and aperture. that’s it - which attributed to it being tremendously popular. and if you think you’re pretty good at guessing shutter speeds, forget a battery - it’s only needed for the built-in straight-forward light meter - literally a small needle that rises or falls as shutter speeds change. the mirror is remarkably smooth and clear, as is the lens that came with the body. with a minimal amount of shutter speeds to choose from, though, the proper film for light conditions needs to be loaded - otherwise, things tend towards dense saturation, even moreso as evidence here by the already high-contrast provia 100 film. but the clarity of the scans, this camera will be set firmly in the rotation for landscape and walk-about work. welcome k!
You’re always playing too much
Making me fun and playful
Your smile is like Christmas
Festive, hard not to tame a bull
We celebrated all year and now you’re suggesting we should
Every day is a holiday with you
A gift of joy
Still wrapped up as we learn the world
You've elevated my curiosity for quality
For keeps, my whole damn life
