The idea of self-effort is paradoxical. Another way of understanding self-effort is as surrender to God. There are times in our spiritual evolution, whether or not the Kundalini is awakened, when there is a clear message from our inner teacher that it is time to take the next step. It way not be convenient or easy. Self-effort is choosing to follow that message no matter what the price.
