"I feel myself to be an angel, beating in ineffectual wings in vain against the granite fortress of your obtuse self-righteousness."
Robertson Davies, Tempest-Tost
Spiritual pride is very apt to suspect others, but a humble saint is most jealous of himself. He is as suspicious of nothing in the world as he is of his own heart. The spiritually proud person is apt to find fault with other saints…and to be quick to notice their deficiencies. But the eminently humble Christian has so much to do at home, and sees so much evil in his own heart, and is so concerned about it, that he is not apt to be very busy with other hearts… Pure Christian humility disposes a person to take notice of everything that is good in others, and to make the most of it, and to diminish their failings, but to give his eye chiefly on those things that are bad in himself.
Jonathan Edwards
"Self-righteousness is like a drug, creating the warm sensation that you are more moral, more compassionate, more sensitive than anyone else in the universe. Once you've done it, you have to do it again and again." - Ann Coulter
The “Woke” Mob
Self-righteous, accusatory, virtue signaling people and media are a contemporary version of Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Like Frollo who hides his sins in the name of God, many of these “woke” people hide behind the “common good” or take religion in vain. By masking their true reasons, they think it absolves them of their guilt or it somehow proves their point. In reality, it comes off as sanctimonious and dishonest, especially since they don’t actually believe in the common good or God.
Additionally, entitlement, lack of self-awareness, and pride obscure their reasoning. This results in a mentality where the end goal justifies the means, no matter the cost. "Woke” people often claim to be part of a virtuous movement or group but they abuse this affiliation or power purely for self-interests, similar to Frollo who was part of the church. And whatever they claim to be against, whether racism or inequality, they often use to carry out their preconceived prejudices for their own goals, becoming hypocrites.
Lastly, the destruction aspect - nearly all “woke” people will destroy lives and property if they don’t get their way just as Frollo torched houses and part of Paris. Some on-line methods include doxxing, trolling, and harassment in order to validate their point. In-person methods include rioting, arson, vandalism, and murder. By committing these acts of violence, they invalidate their point completely and lessen the strength of their supposed cause.
Hellfire (Modernized):
Beata Politic You know I am a righteous one Of my group think I am justly proud
Beata Politic You know I'm more committed than The common, vulgar, weak, intolerants
Then tell me, Politic Why I see their reasons there Why their smold'ring thoughts still scorch my soul
I feel them, I see them The sun shines on their own free will Is blazing in me out of all control
Like fire Hellfire This envy in my skin This burning Desire Is turning me to sin
It's all their fault I'm not to blame It is the free thinkers My foes who sent this flame It's not my fault If in God's plan He made rationale much Stronger than placemen
Protect me, Politic Don't let liberty cast her spell Don't let her ideas sear my flesh and bone Destroy Individuals And let them taste the fires of Hell! Or else let it be mine and mine alone
Hellfire Dark fire Now people it's your turn Choose mobs or Your pyre Be woke or you will burn!
one day I’m gonna grab the screenshots from the book and make my actual, definitive outline of snape and james’ relationship in the canon with all my contextual headcanons about the tension at hogwarts during the marauders era and the genuine and open contempt the potters had for the dark arts and the beginning of the war being played out within the school as people prepared to enter what was in effect a civil war and it’s going to be SO good
The surest way to work up a crusade in favor of some good cause is to promise people they will have a chance of maltreating someone. To be able to destroy with good conscience, to be able to behave badly and call your bad behavior 'righteous indignation' — this is the height of psychological luxury, the most delicious of moral treats.
Aldous Huxley
"A sense of our own righteousness does us great harm...The greater your conviction that you are a sinner, the more certain it is that you are traveling on the right path."
- Theophan the Recluse
All too often in this part of the world, fear of one lie gives birth to another lie, in the foolish hope that by protecting ourselves from the first lie we will be protected from lies in general. But a lie can never protect us from a lie. Those who falsify history do not protect the freedom of a nation but rather constitute a threat to it. [...] When a truth is not given complete freedom, freedom is not complete.
Vaclav Havel
