Every age since the invention of photography has had its signature breakthrough. The late 19th century saw us progress from still to moving pictures; the early 20th century brought us from black and white to color; and the 21st century gave us… the selfie. Now, this has happened.

Introducing, the Selfie Toaster: just in case you can’t make it through breakfast without looking at your own face.

As Mashable reports:

Vermont Novelty Toaster Corp. has been making image-burning toasters for four years. It specializes in sports logos and last year had a big hit with Jesus toast, but company President and CEO Galen Dively had long dreamed of making truly customized designs, including toast with peoples face on it. It was, until recently, an impractical dream.

But now, they’ve cracked it.

For those toast-munching narcissists out there – here’s how it’s done:

1. User uploads selfie to the Vermont Toaster website.

2. The selfie is sent through to the CNC GoTorch machine, which is like a giant automated blow torch. Using a combination of compressed air and electricity, the GoTorch creates a high-heat plasma that burns through metal. After just a few minutes, a selfie plate will be complete.  The team tests it by making a piece of toast.  If they’re happy with the result, they make the final plate and polish it off with a sander to complete.

The plate is then whisked off to a factory in china to be placed in a personalized toaster.

And before you can say, “Cheese!” you’re munching your own face to your ego’s content.

While us snarky cynics are busy pillorying the selfie toaster as end-stage narcissism, it seems the irony has been lost on many a Twitterer. A lot of people are genuinely excited about toasting their own faces.

I imagine future beings picking through the wreckage of a post-apocalytptic earth, finding the selfie toaster and saying (in their own language) “Their narcissism was their downfall.”

But you know what guys? We’ve survived the trout pout. We’ve survived the selfie-stick. We’ll make it past the selfie toaster.
