A quiet conversation about a Christmas tradition turn into an unexpected act of love.
Pairing: Damon Salvatore x Self Insert (Kit) (Established relationship)
Word count: 1,343
Authors note: This is based off of an actual Christmas tradition I stopped doing since moving out and cutting contact with my family. Came out way longer than I anticipated it to but fuck it we ball. This takes place during Kit's first year in Mystic Falls, and her first Christmas with Damon! At this point they've been officialy together a few months. :)
Dividers by @cursed-carmine!
Kit wasn't sure how they ended up talking about Christmas that night. It was late, the fire was dying out, and Damon was sprawled across the couch with his head tipped back. She sat curled up beside him, knees to her chest, watching the embers of the fireplace.
"I guess it's weird," she murmured, fiddling with the sleeve of her hoodie. "Thinking about Christmas now. Now that I'm here and not back with my family."
Damon cracked one eye open. "Different how? Don't tell me your family were carolers…"
Kit huffed a little laugh, nudging his leg. "God, no… Just the stuff we'd do every year. Traditions, I guess."
He didn't say anything. He took a small sip of his bourbon, waiting for her to continue.
"My mom used to make this dish every Christmas Eve," Kit exhaled. "I forget the fancy Italian name for it. It was a catholic household, so… We weren't supposed to eat meat that day. So she'd make this spaghetti with clam sauce. Fresh clams. Parsley. Garlic. It was kind of simple, but it was so good."
Damon was looking at her fully now, listening.
"It's probably my favorite pasta dish. We weren't allowed to have it any other time during the year. Only on Christmas Eve. Maybe that's why I liked it so much, I saw it as a rare treat."
Damon scoffed. "She gatekept spaghetti?"
Kit chuckled, looking down at her fiddling hands. "Yeah. Something like that." Her tone was sad.
Damon tilted his head. His gaze was sharp. She didn't meet his eyes.
"This year's the first year I won't have it," she mused. "I could cook it, I guess. I never got her recipe. And, well… I haven't talked to her since I moved here, so I can't get it now."
Damon's jaw tightened. He knows the story. Kit had mentioned she had a strained relationship with her mother. It was one of the reasons she had moved here. Their mothers being less than ideal was something they were able to bond over, as fucked up as that sounds.
"Anyway, it's dumb. It's just a dish. I'm sure I can make it myself if I really did want it. Make my own version of it or something."
"It's not dumb," Damon said immediately. "We can find a new meal for you to look forward to every year." He tapped the glass of bourbon against her knee. "Or not, if you don't want to. Maybe our tradition can be not having a tradition."
Kit's lips curled up a little. He said it like he was joking, but it didn't really feel like one.
The night drifted on.
---------
Kit got off work early on Christmas Eve. At noon. Something about her job wanting to release them early to "spend time with their families". Kit didn't really care for the reason; any excuse to leave work early was enough for her. She was ready to change into her pajamas and maybe watch a cheesy holiday movie with Damon on the couch and order some takeout.
She opened the door to the boarding house, stepped inside, and froze.
The smell hit her before anything else.
Garlic. White wine. Parsley. Clams. It flooded the hall and stopped her in her tracks like she'd been punched. For a moment, she was back in her childhood home on Christmas Eve.
"No fucking way," she whispered to herself.
She dropped her bag at the door and hung up her coat, padding towards the kitchen.
Damon was at the stove, sleeves shoved up his forearms, a wooden spoon in hand. A pot of water was bubbling gently in front of him. The counter was a bit of a mess; empty clam shells, chopped parsley, scattered garlic skins, and an open bottle of white wine. He turned around when he heard her come in.
"Oh. You're home early."
She stared at him. "What is this?"
He shrugged, casual, but she could see the tension in his shoulders. "The internet says it's called…" He leaned over to look at his phone on the counter. "Spaghetti alle vongole."
Kit shook her head and let out a choked laugh. "I know what it is, Damon. I meant like… What is this? What are you doing?"
Damon raised an eyebrow at her. "Trying to make it, obviously. I found twelve recipes online and all of them seemed slightly different from each other. Went out of town this morning to get fresh clams, I figured you didn't want any of that canned stuff." He cleared his throat and turned back to the stove. "I don't know what your mom did, but the recipe I'm using seems promising, so… Hopefully it's alright."
Kit blinked. She didn't move. She stared at him, a warmth rising behind her ribs in her chest.
"You said you weren't having it this year," Damon continued. "I thought that was… Dumb. And it made you sad. Being broody on Christmas is my job. This seemed like an easy fix — Hey, don't look at me like that. Come on."
She blinked and felt a warmth on her cheek and wiped her face with the heel of her hand, clearing her throat and sniffling. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him, pressing her forehead to his chest with a laugh. "You remembered what I said weeks ago?"
Damon snorted, his arms coming up around her. "Sweetheart, you talk a lot, but I do listen. Of course I remembered."
"You didn't have to do all of this. We could have ordered a pizza."
"Pizza's still on the table if this absolutely sucks." Damon smirked at her. He tilted her chin up so she met his eyes, his smirk softening into a genuine smile. "I know I didn't have to do it… I wanted to. Spirit of Christmas and all. Doing something nice for someone."
Kit nodded, eyes glassy. She leaned up and kissed him softly before pressing her forehead against his. "Thank you. Seriously."
Damon moved his hands to cradle her face, stroking her cheeks as he kissed her back. He smirked at her. "Don't thank me yet," he said dryly. "You haven't tasted it."
---------
They eat at the kitchen island, side by side on the stools.
The spaghetti isn't perfect. The sauce itself is a little heavier and more garlic-y than she remembers. The clams aren't the same. The recipe he used didn't include red pepper flakes. But it's close enough that her eyes burn and her chest feels tight as she eats.
Kit eats slowly, savoring it, trying not to sob into her bowl like an idiot and ruin everything.
Damon pretends not to notice. He eats his portion like it's no big deal, but he watches her from the corner of his eye, tracking every reaction.
"It's good," she finally says. "It's really good."
His shoulders loosen, like he finally relieved some tension he's been holding for hours. "Of course it is," he said smugly. "I'm amazing. I'm perfect at everything I do."
Kit elbowed his arm and smiled down at her bowl.
Damon elbowed her back. "Next year we can try something a little different. Keep adjusting until it tastes exactly like what you used to have. I'll have you help me next time. You can steal the tradition back. Make it better. Do it with someone who..." He cleared his throat, taking a sip of his bourbon. "Cares. About you."
Kit's chest clenched as she met his eyes. "Next year, huh?"
He twirled more spaghetti onto his fork, pointing it at her playfully. "You planning on leaving me before next Christmas?" He joked.
She smiled, shaking her head. "No," she said softly, honest. "Not at all. Not ever."
Damon didn't joke this time. He studied her face like he was committing it to memory, then reached out and brushed his thumb along her cheek. He leaned in and pressed a slow kiss to her forehead, lingering there for a second longer than usual.
"Good," he murmured, low and sure against her skin.
sylvie would like to view a movie in a theater if it's not too cold outside; they aren't much of a homebody and prefer to be out and about rather than inside ... but sometimes a movie is nicer to watch, if only for the fact they have food at home.
zhongli isn't much for movie snacks (outside of maybe nibbling a few popcorn bits from sylvie), but sylvie would get a whole meal if at a theater (and if the movie is good, they will forget to eat some of it until the end where they wolf it all down)
to be fair movies would be a variety, sylvie doesn't care much for christmas movies unless they're something like 'home alone' aka more fun and zany. rarely would they re-watch movies, they'd tend to go for newer things to discuss it and indulge in it as a media and art form (or just as something fun if its more lowkey, but they'd still probably end up having discussions)
𝕎𝕒𝕣𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘𝕤: light cursing, mentions of alcohol, fluff, not proofread, established relationship
𝕎𝕠𝕣𝕕𝕤: 693
𝔸𝕦𝕥𝕙𝕠𝕣𝕤 ℕ𝕠𝕥𝕖𝕤: The first of a couple Molly fics for this selfshipmas. Takes place prior to Molly, and Thana, meeting the rest of the Mighty Nein. In this universe Winter’s Crest is their Christmas in case people don’t know. Also my first time trying to write Molly’s accent so it might be iffy. Bow divider by @estrelinha-s
“You’re really bad at this ya know?” Thana shouted to Molly across the tent.
It was currently Winter’s Crest season. Aka, slow season for the carnival. Due to the holiday, people choose to stay home with friends and family. Not be ‘amazed and wondered’ (as Molly would put it) by the ‘Fletching and Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities’. But, nonetheless, Gustav made everyone pitch in putting up decorations. Trying to make the tents look more festive for the seasons.
Molly was currently on lights duty, and yes, as Thana elegantly put it, he was struggling a bit.
“Hey, I’m doing a great job, and I don’t see ya helpin’ now.”
Molly looked over to Thana, still holding a strand of the enchanted lights. One section that had been tied to a post on the tent tangled up in a huge knot.
“Sure you are. Here, I brought this. That count as help?” She held up a bottles of Courage, which was a wine that they had in great stock at the carnival. Mostly due to it being pretty cheap.
“Nope. But sure as hells won’t pass up free drink.”
Thana came over to Mollymauk, the two sitting down in one of the empty rows of seats used by audience members. Thana used her left fang to uncork the bottle, earning an impressed whistle from Molly.
“Oh hush,” she said through light chuckles, passing the bottle to the teifling beside her.
Molly took the drink by his tail, bringing it to his lips before he passed it back to Thana. She took a swig before setting it down. Molly’s head resting against her shoulder. Looking over the lights.
“It doesn’t look half bad from this angle.”
“That’s because you’re looking at it sideways love. Makes it look straight up when really it’s anything but,” she quipped. Laughing as Molly gave her a pout.
“In fairness, not all of us can fly sweetheart. I was working with what I could now.”
She laughed again at his words. Running her hands through his long purple hair.
“Still pretty festive, I’m sure it gets the point across.”
“Let’s hope our ‘fearless leader’ thinks so too. If Gustav tells me to redo ‘em, might just make ya float up and do the bleedin’ lights yerself.”
She continued to pet his hair, now grabbing herself another swig with her free hand, “Well, I shouldn’t I really shouldn’t drink and fly.”
She smirked against the bottle. Molly sitting up to face her again.
“I could always order ya to do ‘em. Technically above ya in ‘rankin.’”
Thana raised her eyebrows. Giving Molly a loon that said “try me.” Bringing her face closer to his before chucking lightly.
“Mm, yeah, fu-“
“Ah ah ah,” Molly put a finger to her lips, “this is a family friendly carnival ya hear?”
“Oh really? Since when?”
“Since I said so, and since Gustav said we gotta be nicer around the holiday.”
“Good to know.”
The two sat looking at the lights for a minute, Molly playing with Thana’s fingers on her left hand. Gently holding them in his.
“Why do people put lights up during Winter’s Crest?”
“Ya asking for the religious or aesthetic reasons love?”
“Aesthetic really. I know the lights tie to the gods and all that other divine stuff. But why other than that?”
“Well, in my own humble opinion,” Molly sat up more, now bringing Thana’s head against his shoulder, “it’s a sense of hope. Seeing light in the dark sorta thing. That even in the dark winter we can find warmth, and happiness, and love.”
He squeezed her shoulder lightly at that last part.
“That’s a bit corny no?”
“Says the bard. And sure, maybe it’s a bit cliché. Don’t really care though, still a nice sentiment. Or maybe I’m just makin’ bullshit up as I go. Who knows?”
“Hey, what happened to ‘family friendly’?”
“Hush up.”
He laughed and gently pecked her face. Giving her kisses across her cheeks and nose. Making Thana giggle. Once they calmed down, Thana looked back over to the lights.

Damon and Kit get a bit too cozy by the fire.

The fire had been going for about an hour. Kit was situated in front of it, blanket pulled up to her chin, back leaning against the couch. Her laptop was abandoned somewhere to the left. Tonight had that kind of chill that seeped into the boarding house no matter how high the heat was cranked. It was an old building with drafty windows. She wasn't complaining; it gave her an excuse to bundle up in front of the fire.
Damon appeared in her peripheral vision. He studied her for a second, then his mouth curved.
"You look like a burrito."
She tugged the blanket tighter around her, looking up at him. "I'm warm."
He dropped down next to her without asking, sliding underneath the blanket with her before she could protest. She opened her mouth to complain about the cold air he let in, but he moved behind her and pulled her against him, arm looped around her torso, chest pressed against her back.
"There's a whole couch," she pointed out.
His chin rested on her shoulder. "The couch doesn't have you on it."
Kit rolled her eyes, but didn't push him away. She settled back into his chest, closing her eyes, relaxing against him. The fire crackled, moving shadows across the ceiling.
Damon's hand slid up her arm slowly. Through her shirt at first, then finding the edge, slipping underneath to find skin.
"Your hands are cold," she murmured.
He hummed against her neck. "I'm warming them up."
His palm flattened against her stomach. She sucked in a breath and twitched. He made a low amused sound in his throat.
"You're jumpy."
She squirmed a little. "They're freezing."
His fingers walked a slow path up her thigh, playful, teasing, before his thumb traced a line above the waistband of her sweatpants. His mouth found her neck, trailing soft open kisses up towards her jaw. She tilted her head to give him more room and felt him smirking against her skin.
"You're trying to start something," Kit muttered, eyelids fluttering.
Damon's voice was low against her neck. "Who said I wasn't?"
His hand slid lower, under the waistband now, just his fingertips. Waiting.
"Still cold?" he asked.
Her hips shifted against him without her permission. His smirk deepened.
"Didn't think so."
He didn't rush it. That was the thing about Damon; when he decided to take his time, he took it. His fingers traced the hem of her underwear without dipping beneath, unhurried, like they had all night. He liked watching her get impatient.
"Damon."
His thumb dipped just below the fabric. Barely. "Hmm?"
"You're being annoying."
"I'm being thorough." His mouth dragged down her neck, teeth grazing her pulse.
She made a soft frustrated sound. His hand finally, finally, slipped beneath. Her breath caught. His fingers found her clit and her hips jerked up into him, chasing the pressure. He gave it to her, slow circles, barely enough. Heat pooled low in her belly, spreading outward.
"Damon."
"Use your words."
Her fingers dug into his forearm. "I'm going to kill you."
"Kinky." He bit down lightly, playfully, on the curve of her shoulder. "Try again."
She was already wet. He made a low, satisfied sound when he slid lower and felt her slick his fingers. He pressed against her entrance without pushing in.
"More," Kit managed, biting her lip. "Please."
His lips brushed her ear. "See? That wasn't hard."
Damon sank two fingers into her, and her back arched against his chest. His arm tightened around her, holding her in place, his body solid and warm behind her.
His thumb stayed on her clit, circling in time with the slow thrust of his fingers. He found a rhythm that was steady but relentless. The drag of his fingers pumping in and out of her, the press of his thumb, the wet heat of his mouth on her neck… Every sensation was layered on top of the last until her entire body was buzzing.
The tension built slow and heavy, coiling in her tighter every time he moved. Her thighs trembled and her breath came in short, sharp bursts. The fire popped. The blanket was suddenly too hot, trapping all of the warmth between them.
Damon noticed. "Getting warm now?" he teased.
Kit turned her face into his shoulder. "Shut up."
He laughed, curling his fingers, and she forgot what she was even annoyed about. His pace picked up, palm grinding against her with every thrust.
She was close, hovering right at the edge. Her body was wound tight. He felt her squeeze, heard her pulse take off.
"That's it," he breathed against her ear. "Just like that."
Her hand flew to his wrist, not to stop him, just to hold on. He groaned at that, hips pressing forward against her. He was hard, but too focused on her to do anything about it right now.
"Damon—"
"I know," his voice dropped lower. "I've got you."
She came with a choked off sound, clenching around his fingers, her whole body pulling tight and then releasing. Her fingernails dug into his skin, leaving small crescents that would be gone before she stopped shaking. He worked her through it, gentling his touch as she started to come down.
When she finally turned her head to get a good look at him, he was watching her, a smug look on his face.
"You warm now?"
Kit blinked, shoving him weakly. "You're the worst."
His grin widened. "You're welcome."
He let her catch her breath for about thirty seconds before he shifted, rolling her onto her back, pulling the blanket off and tugging her sweatpants down her legs. She watched him through half-lidded eyes as he stripped off his shirt. Firelight caught the planes of his chest and the sharp cut of his hips disappearing into his jeans. He caught her looking and raised an eyebrow.
"Enjoying the show?"
She stretched lazily beneath him. "Maybe."
His hands went to his belt. "Just maybe?"
"I don't think you need an ego boost."
"Mm." The belt came undone. He let his jeans hang open, not pushing them down just yet. "Your mouth says one thing. The rest of you says something else."
He lowered himself over her, braced on his forearms, caging her in. He was close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off his skin, the hard press of him against her thigh through denim.
She reached up, threaded her fingers through his hair, and pulled him down. He went willingly, mouth finding hers. The last coherent thought she had was that she'd never been warmer in her life.

The best thing about the holiday season is that I get to partake in cozy festive activities with Suguru! You’ll probably find us cuddled up on the couch—hot cocoa in hand—as we watch a movie together. Neither of us are too big on Christmas movies but we’ll watch a couple of classics to get into the holiday spirit!
Our first Christmas together, Suguru gifts me some holiday slippers. I’m notoriously horrible at wearing slippers at home (socks are usually the best I can do) but I just can’t help wearing these cute slippers and matching with him during the holiday season!
The colder months are also perfect for hot pot! Suguru likes to make traditional Japanese sukiyaki that we enjoy as a family. It’s another way I get to share in Suguru’s culture, which I love. And it’s always special to see the twins happily stuffing their faces with food!
lights are often hung up during this time of the year to brighten the dark nights. do the electric lights, moonlight, or starlight play an important part in a treasured memory? or perhaps the light of the sun shines down on a moment that you'll remember forever.
i can’t really talk lights and not talk kenzsuki. there’s just so much especially with him that ties back to some kind of source of light to me. i think the very first christmas that we spend together, we do so at his family’s place. and his mom has us come over to hers in late november to decorate the tree with her. it’s something so traditional to the bakugos and something i never really knew (my mom used to always do our tree and she would do it color coordinated how she thinks it’s aesthetically pleasing and let nobody else meddle with it), so mitsuki lets me pick out what to put on it and i think there’s something so tender about the way katsuki helps me drape the string of white light-up snowflakes and other string lights around the tree. he lets me climb on his shoulders and lifts me up so i can reach all the way up to the of tree and when all the lights are down and the room is only lit by a few candles and the lights on the tree, it actually feels like the start our very first christmas together.
i could also not make a kenzsuki post without mentioning the moon. i love her too much i’m afraid. on christmas eve, the same very first we spend at his parents’ home, we end up in his childhood bedroom and like we had done years ago when we were still in school, we climb up the roof. and for hours we just sit letting the moonlight shine on us. and for a moment it’d feel like she moves just for us, ever so slightly. i think it’d dawn on us then, that we’d been in love with each other ever since that very first night under the moon six years ago and we’d laugh about it. the feeling that lingers is a little bittersweet because of how many nights, how many moons we’d missed out on because of the circumstances that surround us. but we’re here now and unspoken under the moon lays the promise that we won’t ever miss another.
