Bloody Sunday
#BloodySunday occurred #onthisday in 1965. Activists James Bevel and Amelia Boynton Robinson helped to organize the Voting Rights march.
The first march was nicknamed "Bloody Sunday" after 600 marchers were attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Law enforcement officers beat unarmed marchers with billy clubs and sprayed tear gas.
The three Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 were part of the Selma Voting Rights Movement and led to the passage that year of the Voting Rights Act, a landmark federal achievement of the 1960s American Civil Rights Movement.
