Day 1 vs. Day 1448
The Senate Building on Courscant was the legislative home of the Galactic, and later, Imperial Senate. Housing the large Grand Convocation Chamber and various offices, the Senate Building was shut down and locked up by the Empire following the Emperor’s dissolution of the Senate.

Day 5 - Favorite Location
The Senate Building
I continue to be fascinated with the changes to Coruscant through the various regimes. I’m thinking a lot about how the seat of governance used to be in the Senate district -- that domed building in the prequels.
Then after the fall of the Jedi Temple and Palpatine’s rise to total power as Emperor it moved to that site. So then, in effect, what was formerly the Jedi Temple became the Imperial Palace and the new seat of governance. I’m assuming the Senate complex then became the seat of the Empire’s massive bureaucracy?
Anyway fast forward to the New Republic era where the Imperial Palace now becomes the residence of the Chief of State -- that is Mon Mothma, if I’m not mistaken, but also the lodgings of the Inner Council (what Leia and Fel’ya are part of) and what will become the New Republic Senate (this is in the TTT, around 8ABY, remember the Liberation of Coruscant happens in 6ABY).
As it grows the government gets moved back into the Senate building.
Which makes me wonder -- how far is the Imperial Palace/former Jedi Temple (and it’s district) from the Senate? Is it east of the Senate? North of it?
@gffa sorry to bug you, but since you know a bunch about Coruscant, can you speak to the relative locations with respect to each other? Is there a map? (I looked at your fab Coruscant primer, but might have missed one.)
To bring it back to shipping:
I theorize that Mara does not live in the Imperial Palace district, by the time she starts working and stuff is in full swing after Thrawn. She will be probably part of the first few waves of functionaries that work in the Senate district. This could go either way, but I’d imagine people just wouldn’t FIT in the Imperial Palace. It’s not just senators, it’s senators and their aides etc. And Mara is just not that important, as much as I love her. Her work would probably be under a type of Ministry of Trade.
On the other hand, having arrived at Coruscant maybe two - three years before Mara, Luke as the TTT indicates has his living and working quarters in the former Imperial Palace. He might know this space very well considering all the excavation of history that he’s interested in doing. I keep thinking back to this in the TTT:
He shivered again. The really maddening part of it was that he couldn’t sense any such concentration of evil in the Palace. The Council had made a point of asking him about that, in fact, when they’d first considered moving operations here to the Imperial City. He’d had to grit his teeth and tell them that, no, there seemed to be no residual effects of the Emperor’s stay. But just because he couldn’t sense it didn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t there.
I definitely think there was stuff there. There had to be and it bothers me that a whopping five years post Endor, Luke can’t feel it (especially given the fact that he could sense the darkness in the cave at Dagobah, and what happened in the Palace is much more recent). It can only be because the prequels weren’t available then and so we didn’t know the complex history the Imperial Palace has. I hate it when I can only turn to an out-of-universe explanation.
