Sources: EPA blocks warnings on cancer-causing chemical

Burying the formaldehyde study is part of an effort by Pruitt and aides to undermine EPA's research program, current and former officials tell POLITICO.

Just before Trump became president, EPA scientists completed a report warning that “most Americans inhale enough formaldehyde vapor in the course of daily life to put them at risk of developing leukemia and other ailments.” But the EPA has never released the report to the public.

Back in January, Scott Pruitt confirmed in testimony before the Senate that the formaldehyde report was ready for release to the public, but that the EPA was intentionally delaying its release:

“During a Senate hearing in late January, Ed Markey asked then-EPA director Scott Pruitt about a little rumor that he’d overheard. ‘It’s my understanding,’ the Massachusetts senator said, “that the EPA has finalized its conclusion that formaldehyde causes leukemia and other cancers and that [the] completed new assessment is ready to be released for public review, but is being held up.’ ‘You know, my understanding is similar to yours,’ Pruitt replied.”

Pruitt promised the Senate that he would look into it. He never did.

Instead, the EPA took a meeting with the American Chemistry Council’s Formaldehyde Panel. The American Chemistry Council “spent more than $7 million last year lobbying EPA and Congress on issues including ... formaldehyde.” The Panel argued against release of the formaldehyde report, not because it was wrong, but because nearly a million jobs “depend on the use of formaldehyde.”

“As stated in our meeting, a premature release of a draft assessment … will cause irreparable harm to the companies represented by the Panel and to the many companies and jobs that depend on the broad use of the chemical.”

The top staffer for the Formaldehyde Panel, Kimberly Wise White, has repeatedly lobbied the EPA to “incorporate industry-funded research that found no link between formaldehyde and leukemia,” and argued that those industry-funded studies “shifted the scientific consensus away from the conclusion that it does.” (You might recognize White’s name. Last year, Pruitt kicked all of the academic scientists off the EPA’s science advisory board and replaced them with people representing the industries the EPA is supposed to regulate. White was one of Pruitt’s appointees. She’s still lobbying the EPA, and her creative interpretation of “consensus” squares exactly with Pruitt’s own interpretation of a supposed lack of “consensus” on climate change. But I digress.)

Pruitt’s EPA deferred to the Council’s desire to put their corporate profits above the health and safety of U.S. citizens. Some officials have now come forward to confirm the reason the EPA is blocking the formaldehyde report’s release:

“Top advisers to departing Administrator Scott Pruitt are delaying its release as part of a campaign to undermine the agency’s independent research into the health risks of toxic chemicals.”

And although Pruitt may have resigned, don’t expect better progress under the EPA’s new acting director, Andrew Wheeler:

“As staff director for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in 2004, Wheeler worked to delay an earlier version of the EPA’s formaldehyde analysis – and went on to profitable career as chemical industry lobbyist.”

The National Academies of Sciences, an independent panel of the country’s top scientists, must weigh in on all EPA risk assessments. This is the highest level of scrutiny a scientific study can receive. And the EPA has already paid the Academies $500,000 for that review. But the work cannot start until the EPA sends the study; blocking its release prevents the review.

“‘If the administration was really keen on protecting public health, why wouldn’t they send this to the National Academy and give it a really good review?’ the former EPA official asked. ‘If it survives that review, then there’s a public health problem that needs to be dealt with, and if it doesn’t survive the review, then they can point the finger at IRIS [the EPA’s Integrated Risk Information System] and say, “You’re dead.”’ The former official said there would be only one reason not to ask the country’s top experts whether they agree with the analysis: ‘You don’t want the answer.’”

Traitor Senators Took Money from Iran Lobby, Back Iran Nukes, by Daniel Greenfield

The Democrats are becoming a party of atom bomb spies.

Senator Markey has announced his support for the Iran deal that will let the terrorist regime inspect its own Parchin nuclear weapons research site, conduct uranium enrichment, build advanced centrifuges, buy ballistic missiles, fund terrorism and have a near zero breakout time to a nuclear bomb.

There was no surprise there.

Markey had topped the list of candidates supported by the Iran Lobby. And the Iranian American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) had maxed out its contributions to his campaign.

After more fake suspense, Al Franken, another IAPAC backed politician who also benefited from Iran Lobby money, came out for the nuke sellout.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the Iran Lobby’s third Dem senator, didn’t bother playing coy like her colleagues. She came out for the deal a while back even though she only got half the IAPAC cash that Franken and Markey received.

As did Senator Gillibrand, who had benefited from IAPAC money back when she first ran for senator and whose position on the deal should have come as no surprise.

The Iran Lobby had even tried, and failed, to turn Arizona Republican Jeff Flake. Iran Lobby cash had made the White House count on him as the Republican who would flip, but Flake came out against the deal. The Iran Lobby invested a good deal of time and money into Schumer, but that effort also failed.

Still these donations were only the tip of the Iran Lobby iceberg.
