#SendSilencePacking - A display of more than 1,100 backpacks to represent the nunber of U.S. students that die by suicide every year. The aim of the exhibit is to increase awareness and awareness about discussing suicide prevention.
#SendSilencePacking It's okay to talk about how you are feeling. I used to be all happy and smiles, keeping my problems to myself. I always felt that I would burst into huge floods of tears. Then I finally realized that I needed to talk to someone I can trust. If someone you know is having issues that are affecting their mental health, reach out to them. Let them know you care.

Let’s talk real world issues.
September was Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. This month UCR is hosting “Send Silence Packing,” a campaign that encourages depression awareness. Suicide is the second leading cause of college fatality and it’s our job at UCR to change that statistic.
The campaign brings to reality the deaths caused by depression. 1,100 backpacks were dropped around Watkins lawn and the bell tower. Each bag has a story attached. Read a few… please. You will see words from loved ones, friends—people who wished they had known before it was too late. This campaign is visceral without being graphic, it drives the point home that it’s our job as educated students to be aware. Depression often carries a stigma and we need to be the first to make it change from taboo to open conversation.
UCR offers free counseling sessions and a 24 hour hotline for emergency situations. (951-827-5531) We care about our highlanders and we want you to have the best experience on this campus. There is also a National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) There are so many resources available, but the number one thing we can do is be conscious of our friends. (67% of college students tell a friend first that they are feeling suicidal.) Check in with your friends, remind them that they can always find support in you.
Be there for each other guys! We’re in this together.
