'"The Eagles! The Eagles!"' he shouted. "'The Eagles are coming!" "The Eagles!" cried Bilbo once more, but at that moment a stone hurtling from above smote heavily on his helm, and he fell with a crash and knew no more.' -J.R.R. Tolkien Montezuma NWR is known for its Bald Eagles, but their nests are located far away from where people can get to and they're hard to spot without powerful binoculars or a big zoom lens, neither of which I have. But sometimes luck intervenes; we were out of the car at the main pool photo blind when this one flew almost directly over us. I saw it coming with enough time to get the camera up and just keep shooting until it was gone again. It was an impressive sight. Our second stop was at the Tschache pool observation tower, which overlooks a large area where hundreds of wading birds and waterfowl were gathered. There was at least one eagle here too, and I got a good look at it through the telescope at the top of the tower. Pictures 8 and 9 are of that bird soaring over the pool. The last picture is of nest number two, near the Tschache Pool. The nests are huge and visible from far away. I took this from at least half a mile, but if you look closely you can see an eagle's white head sticking out from the top of the eyrie. #montezumanationalwildliferefuge #birds #birdwatching #baldeagle #senecafallsny #nationalparkservice (at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge)
