In 2020, a new train station will open on the Yamanote line loop. Nearby is Sengakuji Temple. Some people may pass by thinking it is just another Japanese temple. However, this temple has many followers as this is where the loyal forty-seven ronin (浪人 samurai who had no master or lord) and their master, Asano Naganori, are buried. This is a true story that happened more than 300 years ago of a vendetta (ending in their death by seppuku) of the 46 ronin and their leader Oishi Kuranosuke who plotted for two years and avenged the death of Naganori and was buried at this temple. On December 14th, 1702, they attacked and killed Kira Kozukenosuke at his residence and marched to Asano's grave in Sengakuji to report their accomplishment (and present Kira’s head) to their late lord. Here you can find also the well where they washed Kira's decapitated head. In the Memorial Hall you will be able to see the artifacts and historical records of this incident. On December 14 a “Gishi-sai” is held at the temple to honor their memory and men dressed up as the ronin will present the "head" to their master's grave.. #47ronin #warrior #samurai #jappone #samouraï #bushido #bushi #swordmaster #print #samuraiwarrior #chushingura #sengakuji #japaneseculture #japanlegend #japanesehistory #tokyo https://www.instagram.com/p/B0F_tIvnxqU/?igshid=1ejor8nl5igzw

on day three mom and i visited sengakuji, sensoji, and tokyo tower.
first we went to sengakuji which is the final resting place of the famous 47 ronin. the story of the 47 ronin is abt lord asano and lord kira. asano attacked kira bc kira was treating asano badly and it went against samurai code to treat others of equal rank with such disrespect. asano didnt manage to kill him and later that day he was sentenced to seppuku (killing oneself ritualistically) while kira was not punished at all. asano clan was removed from power, leaving all of his samurai masterless and his family poor and suffering. they planned revenge for almost two years before they finally succeeded in killing kira. they washed his head in a well on the grounds of sengakuji and laid it at their masters grave, then all 47 committed seppuku. its a story of loyalty and justice and its fitting that they are all buried together. i dont know why but i really enjoy sengakuji and the story of the 47 ronin and i get a little emotional when i thi k abt how theyre all together and reunited with their master in death haha.
after that we hit up sensoji again, its quite different during the day!
that evening we hit up tokyo tower and traipsed thru part of zojoji temple. tokyo tower has these crepes that are really good so we ate those and then shopped on the shopping level. by this point i was so wiped out that we took a taxi back lol. the stone steps were really hitting me. legs dead lol
