Kōshi Tsuzo - The Beginning
History is, for the most part, linear, drawn from a standpoint of looking back, and whether it is to marvel at the carbonised remains of dinosaurs, ponder on the construction of ancient wonders, or simply to try and remember what you had for breakfast, the process is still the same.
Time to us, who live out our busy lives on this small, blue planet, is sequential. One step, one day after the other, as our home spins on its orbit through the stars, weaving us into its journey. Our own history, our evolvement, isn't a smooth gradient, but one that peaks and troughs, ebbs and flows with the cycles of nature and the fortunes of humankind.
There are those who at times in our past have been heralded as seers, prophets and mystics, the ones who seem to stand on the fringes of our earthbound normality, and more of the like have been burnt at the stake as witches, or souls possessed, for daring to have vision or understanding of the intangible.
Humans have always been a notoriously suspicious lot.
Kill it first, ask it questions and think about it later at leisure.
So through all our history, and despite it, one place has been, will be, was, and more than likely still is, a realm with tenuous links to our mundane world, kept safely anonymous by our arrogant denials at the possibility there may be others in the universe. To a select few who know of its existence, it is known simply as 'The Sanctuary’.
Forged in eons past, in a pact between the Lady of Time and the enigmatic Nexas, it was the designated rescue site for the remnants of a catastrophe and The Elements. Worthy of a weighty fable in its own right, the telling of The Sanctuary's creation is best saved for another day, as although this may relate a tale of beginnings and courses, a fresh patch of tapestry in the woven scheme of things, its trail is not of The Sanctuary's past, but whether it has a future.
Above all, in a quiet, slightly phase-shifted space, The Lattice encompasses the little blue planet we know as our home. Unseen by human eyes, its presence is largely hidden, and yet the network of energies protect the globe from The Elements housed at the Sanctuary, and the rest of the planet from those of other realms who would seek to liberate them and use them for their own devices.
Why Earth? Although I could relate a series of complicated and justifiable reasons, it actually boils down to the personal choice of The Lady of Time, Shai. Her fondness for our planet, and even more so for the era in time known as the Sengoku in Japan, saw The Sanctuary established high within the mountain ranges of Kai.
(This in itself is not entirely accurate, as The Sanctuary 'overlaps’ as well as exists, and to its peculiar inhabitants is as vast as any planet from within.)
Not subject to linear time, well, not in the way we humans understand, it would be from there that both the greatest threat and ultimate salvation would come, and for a short time, involve the great courts of the era, leaving a strange legacy in its wake.
Like all stories, this has a beginning, and ours begins with a creation.
