Hey there! For the Trope Mash Up thing, how would you do a Wishshipping Holiday Fic with a Poorly Timed Confession?
Okay, so, this is going to be angsty.
The scenario is this: They’re in college—or at least, Yuugi is in college. They’re in their early twenties, Yuugi is finishing up university, and he and Jounouchi live together in an apartment they share. In this way, it’s a modification on my official headcanon for how things go down for them, in order to incorporate the two tropes mentioned above. So it’s like if things happened mostly as they do in my official headcanon, only altered so that Yuugi confesses during a holiday retreat instead, at the worst possible time.
In this scenario, let’s say that Jounouchi actually has a girlfriend. In my headcanon, he dated random girls over the course of the time he and Yuugi lived together as roommates, before any romantic confessions happened and before they got together. These dates were never serious; Jounouchi would go out with each girl a few times at most before it would just fizzle out. They were like flings, you know? But barely even that because it’d only be a couple of dates. In any case, let’s say that there was one girl that he actually dated for a longer period of time. And because they had been dating for a little while, when the boys (Yuugi, Jounouchi, Honda, and Bakura, because Anzu is studying in New York when this goes down) plan their summer holiday trip to Hokkaido, Jounouchi ends up inviting this girl along, because hey! Beach vacation holiday, right?
If you’ve read my outline, you’ll know that by this point Yuugi has realized his feelings for Jounouchi. Bakura knows how Yuugi feels, because Yuugi has told him, but no one else does. Needless to say, Yuugi is not happy at all that Jounouchi is bringing this girl along (he’s not happy about the girl at all; Yuugi has never liked her, and he insists to himself that it’s not because he’s jealous (… not just because he’s jealous)), and neither is Bakura, because Bakura was planning on wingmanning for Yuugi, and he can’t exactly do that if Jounouchi’s girlfriend is there. Anyway, Yuugi is determined to not say a goddamn word about his feelings or ruin things in any way (Bakura thinks he should, because Jounouchi would understand, but Yuugi is insistent that no, he will not, because Jounouchi has a girlfriend and Yuugi doesn’t want to ruin his happiness), so he tries extra hard to not be completely depressed and put-out that this girl who doesn’t even know that Duel Monsters is called Duel Monsters (she called it “that thing—Dueling Monsters, right?” the first time they met and Yuugi has never forgotten and can’t believe Jounouchi would even date someone like—!) is there. He really, really tries, to the point where when Jounouchi asks him a few times, “is everything okay?” he smiles real bright and assures him that it is.
But of course, it’s not, because he’s in love with his best friend who is dating someone else (Yuugi is 99% sure that Jounouchi does not love this girl; he knows Jounouchi, better than anyone, and thinks he would be able to tell). He manages to hold it together for most of the trip, but one night he heads down to the beach to find Jounouchi (after Honda off-handedly said that’s where he saw Jounouchi headed when Yuugi asked) to see if the two of them could maybe play a game or something, but when he gets down there, he … in a little cove by the sea, he … sees Jounouchi and this girl making out. And they’re pretty into it.
And his heart just breaks.
Jounouchi, despite being pretty into the kissing, notices this, and despite how Yuugi (feeling so cliché, so cliché!) turns and runs, Jounouchi still caught sight of his face. So he, being Jounouchi, excuses himself from his girlfriend’s attentions and takes off after, because he doesn’t know why Yuugi was upset, but he does know that Yuugi was upset and that’s enough for him to do something about it. (And yes, you read that right: Jounouchi does not put the pieces together, even then.) Jounouchi catches up to Yuugi on the beach, and I mean … they’re on the beach, it’s not private. They have no privacy at all. And Yuugi is upset, and probably crying, even as he insists over and over that he’s fine (and Jounouchi flatly calls bullshit on that, because if Yuugi was fine he wouldn’t be crying), and finally, after pushing and cajoling … finally, Yuugi confesses that he’s upset because he’s in love with Jounouchi.
And Jounouchi just … stares at him. “What?”
“I know … I know this is the worst timing,” Yuugi says (or sobs, really). “We’re on this trip, and it’s supposed to be fun, and your—your girlfriend’s here—”
“But I—I—I—if you’re asking, that’s … that’s why … that’s why I’m upset. Why I’ve—been upset.”
And Yuugi notices, then, that Jounouchi’s girlfriend had followed them down the beach, and is staring with wide eyes. And Jounouchi’s eyes, too, are still wide. And he’s still staring at Yuugi. And for once, Yuugi can’t tell what he’s thinking, but he doesn’t think … well. He knows Jounouchi. And he thinks that if Jounouchi was about to reciprocate his confession, he wouldn’t look like that.
“I …” He starts, then stops, and finally says, “Have a … a good rest of the night, Jounouchi-kun.”
( Send me two tropes from this list + a ship and I’ll describe how I’d combine them in the same story.)
