yeah, Hamlet, i know, i know... so it’s pretty understandable.
but i mean STILL. what a very anti-republican, oppressive (if benevolent) system. the lions claim their right to rule derives from this being their ‘rightful place’; the fact that this works probably stems from their physical (and in parts mental) superiority. because the other creatures, from hyenas to antelopes to meerkats, are obviously sentient, but if we follow the hyenas’ own claims, they consider themselves less intelligent than lions.
but does this physical+mental superiority (EVEN if the latter isn’t a result of century-long brainwashing them into actually believing they’re less intelligent and oppression of every hyena-attempt at education) justify lions eating other sentient creatures/withholding resources? the first is pretty clearly a result of the lions’ necessity to eat meat. if they do not want other lions, as is understandable because most animals are speciesist, they have to eat other creatures, and all other creatures in the tlk universe are sentient. this must be justified; not only to the other creatures, but also to themselves. i suppose that’s where the ‘your rightful place in the circle of life’ philosophy comes from. if they did not cling to that ‘everyone has a destiny they have to fulfill and the prey animals’ destiny is to be eaten’ philosophy, how could they sleep at night?
but the behavior they exhibit towards the hyenas is imo less understandable and less forgivable. they are not prey animals. why do lions and hyenas not make a common ‘predator elite’ and oppress the other sentient creatures together? wouldn’t that be more efficent, as there’s more oppression potential (more physical strength) and further revolutions like scar’s will be prevented?
we do not have enough information why that’s so, so i propose there are two reasons the lions keep themselves are the only elite and keep the hyenas oppressed. one is that the available resources are simply not enough: and that the imploding economy under scar was not a result of bad legislative decisions but inevitable. this is supported by the fact that there seem to be very few lions. there simply aren’t enough prey animals around to feed a larger amount to a satisfying degree, much less all those hyenas. another reason is the aforementioned ‘everyone has their own destiny’ philosophy: the lions regard themselves as very different from the hyenas. it is the hyenas’ rightful place to be beneath. also, there are no intra-personal relationships that would help bridge differences, and considering the biological differences, at least sexual relationships are impossible.
i suppose the current oppression of hyenas is a bit because of both reasons. but can that work for a larger amount of time? either the lions have to go full-on genocide on the hyenas or another war will break out eventually - people don’t like, y’know, starving. or they could include them in their society, as i said.
in such a society (shortness of resources, a dissatisfied lower class, a philosophy of distinct different-ness) an absolute monarchy can be very effective, but probably only short-term: as an aristocratic dictatorship. but history shows time and time again that dictatorships are not eternal.
but how could the system be improved under these circumstances? if we assume that the problem really lies in the shortness of resources, and that an improvement of technology could, as it has historically, lead to more available resources, that could be a way to include hyenas in the ruling class. I’m thinking for example a kind of animal husbandry, maybe with a kind of mass production of antelopes in the future; a better transport system to hunt in less time with more results. if there are enough resources, an enlightened enough future king/queen might see the positive outcomes of including hyenas in the ruling class. in time and with a careful education, the hyenas could be fully included in lion society and they would not have to go hungry again, as scar once promised.
however, the problem of ‘eating other sentient creatures’ and the cognitive dissonance that has to accompany this can’t be solved that way. if anything, the only positive change that can occur it from the current absolute monarchy dictatorship to a checks-and-balances aristocratic dictatorship, without a single king/queen and different branches of government (maybe with socialist elements), but still very much oppressing the other sentient creatures. the very foundations of the tlk universe prevent a more republican/democratic system, as including the other creatures in the democratic body would be the literal death sentence for the lions.
