PERFECT MARRIAGE REVENGE (2023) REVIEW: I CAME FOR THE CHAOS, I STAYED FOR THE DIVA AND THE PERFECT SIMP
I gotta be honest: these kinds of high-drama revenge soaps usually lose me halfway through. The female lead always starts strong, talking about vengeance and justice, but then spends the next 10 episodes catching feelings and forgetting the point. I don’t want to root for someone who says “I’ll ruin them all” and then gets distracted by a sad boy with a nice jawline. STAY FOCUSED.
But Perfect Marriage Revenge? No. This show said, “We know what you’re here for. Sit down.”
And I did. I sat DOWN.
Out of the few K-dramas I’ve watched recently, if I had a dime for every strong woman who commits to revenge and actually follows through - like, meticulously, unwaveringly, with zero hesitation - I’d have two dimes. Not much, but pretty happy that I witnessed it twice. Shout out to Han Yi-joo and Moon Dong-eun (The Glory) - queens, legends, destroyers of evil, purveyors of jaw-dropping comebacks and elegant fury. I bow down. Diva rights.
And listen. This show has CRACK in it. I was hooked from episode one. No amount of low-budget aesthetics, absolutely batshit schemes, or villains being cartoonishly evil could pull me away. In fact, the evil was so over-the-top it looped back around to being delicious.
Now. Let’s talk about Seo Do-guk.
I don’t even need to say much. You saw him. You heard him. You felt it in your soul.
This man is my dream emotional support husband. He is the greenest flag to ever green. Gorgeous. Rich. Polite. Loyal. Slightly unhinged when it comes to protecting the woman he loves. And, most importantly, always about consent with a side of unspoken sexual tension.
“I will not hold back anymore.” “Use me.” “HOW CAN I HELP YOU NOT TO THINK ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE?”
SIR? HELLO?
Since The Glory, I’ve been chasing the high of Yeo Jeong’s deliciously loyal, soft-yet-scary, trauma-healing-boyfriend energy. And now Seo Do-guk shows up in a three-piece suit, talking about marriage contracts and full commitment, and I’m just supposed to keep living like everything’s fine?
If I had a dime for every ride-or-die, painfully handsome, “there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you” type of K-drama man I’ve fallen for recently, I’d again have two dimes - and once more, not much, but pretty happy that I witnessed it twice.
Yeo Jeong and Seo Do-guk forever. My fantasy K-drama power couple sandwich. Can you imagine having both of them?
LORD.
I would simply ascend.
(Oh, totally unrelated but this gif just makes me feel things, you should see it, too. YOU’RE WELCOME.)
