From 1949 through to 1990, the city of Bonn served as the de facto capital and political centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Modernist architect Sep Ruf was among those charged with designing a series of new buildings for the West German government, incl. the Ministry of Food & Agriculture and the Chancellor’s Bungalow, which became the architect’s most famous building. The bungalow became, of course, emblematic of Western Germany itself and a highly visible statement of the progressive outlook. Ruf designed a single-storey, flat-roofed building in a distinctly modern style that formed an open relationship with the gardens alongside it. Towards the river Rhine, the bungalow was protected by an extra set of bulletproof glass, which covered not only the back of the house but also the terrace. The dwelling was composed of two interconnecting pavilions, hosting the occupants‘ private and public realms. The more „public“ wing contained generous living spaces, suited to receptions and entertaining, as well as a seperate dining room. The other wing held private, family spaces and bedrooms with staff accomodation to one side. The residence served six chancellors, including Helmut Kohl, who lived here for sixteen years with his family. Following reunification and the return of the government to Berlin, the house serves now as a Museum.
