The nose knows
As I sit in bed, plagued with a migraine (I’m in a kind of in-between coherent state right now), I’m contemplating a big decision I’m going to have to make.
Yesterday, I visited the ENT, and he confirmed that since the Afrin has been working to quell my migraines, the root cause of most of them is probably my deviated septum. The best fix for this will be a septoplasty and turbinectomy. These will cause no cosmetic differences and would be surgery to fix and restructure the inside structures of my nose.
There’s about a week of recovery time from the surgery. It’s not guaranteed that I would have no migraines after the surgery, as I am still genetically predisposed to them, but through management of my triggers, I would get them much less frequently.
So now I have to think about the idea of elective surgery for this.
It’s a routine surgery that takes about an hour, but I’m also concerned about the fact that I have to be intubated to help me breathe. They always say that you’ll just have a sore throat after the surgery, but there’s always a very (very, very, verrrrry) small chance that there can be some damage to the vocal mechanism.
As someone who will depend on their voice for their life’s work (and due to the fact that I sing, and that’s a big part of my life), that’s a possible risk that concerns me. I know it’s a small risk, but I worry about these things.
I’m currently trying to find information from people who have had such a procedure, not just for migraine relief, but for other purposes as well, to see if they can give me any other insight.
As for now, I’m going to keep catching up on Once Upon A Time and relaxing.
Now that the semester is over (that’s right! One semester of Graduate School down!) I can relax a bit and hopefully ease back into the routine of taking care of myself better.
x be well
