Otto Hightower arrives at Dragonstone to offer terms of peace to Rhaenyra I
After the coronation of RHAENYRA I, SER OTTO HIGHTOWER, HAND OF THE KING AEGON II, arrives at DRAGONSTONE to offer terms of peace to QUEEN RHAENYRA and her family, accompanied by MAESTER ORWYLE, SER ERRYK CARGYLL, and a small garrison of soldiers from HOUSE HIGHTOWER
The GREEN's envoy was unable to reach the castle gates and was intercepted by the QUEEN's CONSORT, DAEMON TARGARYEN, and the QUEENSGUARD; SER STEFFON DARKLYN, SER LORENT MARBRAND & SER ARRYK CARGYLL, along with a garrison of soldiers from HOUSE TARGARYEN, on the bridge leading to the fortress.
It was there where QUEEN RHAENYRA I arrived on the back of her dragon SYRAX, and while OTTO HIGHTOWER addressed RHAENYRA as “PRINCESS,” the QUEEN made it clear to SER OTTO that she was now QUEEN and that he and all his followers were traitors to the realm.
SER OTTO was the messenger who delivered KING AEGON's offer to his sister RHAENYRA: acknowledge AEGON as KING and swear allegiance to the IRON THRONE; in return, KING AEGON would confirm RHAENYRA's claim on DRAGONSTONE, which would then pass to her HEIR, JACAERYS VELARYON; in addition, LUCERYS VELARYON would be confirmed as HEIR to DRIFTMARK and future LORD OF THE TIDES
And last but not least, her children by DAEMON TARGARYEN would be granted positions of great honor: AEGON THE YOUNGER as the KING's SQUIRE, and VISERYS as his ROYAL CUPBEARER. AEGON also promised to pardon any KNIGHT & LORD who had conspired against his accession
But the politics didn't last long, as the QUEEN's CONSORT, DAEMON TARGARYEN, declared that he would rather feed his children to the dragons than see them carrying shields and cups for, and I quote… “your drunken, usurper, cunt of a king…”
Tensions escalated when OTTO HIGHTOWER declared that “every symbol of legitimacy belongs to Aegon” and that HOUSE STARK, TULLY & BARATHEON had been offered very generous terms. QUEEN RHAENYRA stripped him of his HAND OF THE KING badge and called him a traitor; SER OTTO, for his part, appealed to the QUEEN DOWAGER, ALICENT, and somehow managed to move the QUEEN's heart, just as the ROYAL CONSORT drew his sword to take SER OTTO's head—a thing the QUEEN forbade, concluding that they would receive her answer shortly, and that OTTO HIGHTOWER had safe passage back to KINGSLANDING
BONUS
Something that draws attention is that KING AEGON II’s offer included relinquishing his claim to DRAGONSTONE, since the title of “PRINCE OR PRINCESS OF DRAGONSTONE” is reserved exclusively for HEIRS to the IRON THRONE. This may have been an attempt to establish a new tradition, as AEGON II was never named heir and therefore never held the title of PRINCE OF DRAGONSTONE.
The truth is that, under different circumstances, the positions offered to PRINCES AEGON & VISERYS would be among the highest honors, but in this particular case, both positions would be used to hold the PRINCES as hostages of the GREENS…
Another thing that caught the attention of those present were the insults directed by the ROYAL CONSORT toward KING AEGON II; witnesses report that, during his stay in KINGSLANDING to attend the audience for the succession of DRIFTMARK, the then-PRINCE DAEMON heard from the then-PRINCESS HELAENA that AEGON “ignored her most of the time, except when he was drunk” words that the CONSORT apparently did not forget.
