the gap: zambia has one of the finest collections of wildlife and natural tourism assets in africa. one of the most distinctive collections of cultural and heritage tourism assets. 22 gazetted traditional ceremonies. a pre-colonial history of extraordinary depth. a culinary identity that is genuinely unique. it receives 1.5 to 2 million tourist arrivals per year. kenya receives 14 million. tanzania receives 4 million. the gap is not explained by the product. the gap is explained by what has been invested in developing, presenting, and marketing the product.

what zambian tourism could become — if the five structural deficits are addressed over the next decade — is a sector generating USD 3 to USD 5 billion in annual revenue, employing several hundred thousand zambians, and making zambia synonymous with a specific tourism experience that kenya and tanzania cannot offer: the authentic, intimate, unhurried encounter with africa's wildlife and cultures in an environment not yet overwhelmed by volume.

why the gap between endowment and investment attracted? five structural factors.

policy instability: zambia has had too many policy changes within investment horizons. this is changing — the post-2023 debt restructuring and stated government commitment to investment climate stability are positive signals that need to be sustained over years.

infrastructure gaps: electricity constrains mining; roads and irrigation constrain agriculture; airstrips constrain tourism; service infrastructure constrains real estate.

access to finance: the zambian financial system does not yet efficiently channel investment capital to the sectors that need it. interest rates remain high. the domestic capital market is thin.

skills and institutional capacity: the investor needs accountants, engineers, agronomists, project managers, and supporting institutional capacity — banks that understand the sector, regulators who apply rules consistently, courts that enforce contracts.

zambia has one of the greatest mineral endowments on earth. the katanga supergroup — 880 million years old, stratiform copper sulphide deposits of extraordinary grade and size. the question the series has been asking is not whether the copper is there. it is whether zambia is positioned to capture the full value of what it has.

the answer, as of 2026: partially. zambia produces cathode copper at the nkana refinery — good. but zambia still exports significant quantities of copper concentrate, carrying the smelting and refining margin to whoever processes it. the fabrication gap — wire rod, copper tube, copper sheet — remains unclosed. USD 160 million per year in additional revenue from full domestic fabrication is still being exported with the copper.

zambia's social contract with its mining communities is imperfect. copperbelt communities still face unresolved questions about employment access and environmental quality. the artisanal mining sector operates in conditions of legal uncertainty, physical risk, and economic precarity. the china relationship is asymmetric in ways that create structural risks.

but the opportunity is more compelling in 2026 than it has ever been. the energy transition is creating a demand surge for copper, cobalt, and nickel. zambia sits on the second largest cobalt resource, a top-ten copper resource, and an emerging nickel resource — at the precise historical moment when the value of those resources is being structurally repriced upward.

the decisions zambia makes in the next five to ten years will determine whether this generation of zambians captures the opportunity that the energy transition is offering.

This series began with a question. Have you heard of morganite?

Most of you had not. And that — the gap between what Zambia has and what Zambia knows it has — is the whole point.
