the zambian agriculture series: the closing argument
twelve posts. maize and the mono-crop question. cassava, the living food bank. soybeans quietly transforming eastern province. irrigation and the 5.7 percent gap. the smallholder farmer who feeds zambia and receives the least support. sugar on the kafue. cotton's rise and fall. the hunger season that does not have to happen. fish farming's protein revolution. horticulture — roses on sale in london. honey from the miombo of north-western province.
the closing argument begins with the number that has appeared in almost every post: 42 million hectares. one of the largest per capita agricultural endowments in africa. the third largest freshwater resource on the continent. the gap between what this endowment could produce and what it currently produces is the largest single development gap in zambia.
the models already exist at smaller scale: miombo honey in european premium markets. roses from the lusaka plateau on sale in london. soybeans feeding the commercial poultry sector. tilapia from kafue basin ponds feeding lusaka's middle class. sugar from nakambala meeting southern african demand. each is a working model of what zambian agriculture can do.
three things the series has confirmed.
first: zambia does not have an agricultural endowment problem. it has an investment problem. the water, the land, the soil, the sunshine are there. the irrigation infrastructure, the roads, the extension services, and the credit facilities are not, at the scale they should be.
second: zambia's food security problem is primarily a storage, market, and distribution problem, not a production problem. post-harvest losses, market information gaps, and transport infrastructure failures are solvable.
third: the smallholder farmer — predominantly a woman, farming two to three hectares with a hoe and saved seed — is not a problem to be solved. she is the solution.
the soil above the copper is as extraordinary as the copper beneath it. this series has tried to prove it.
the zambian agriculture series is complete. 🇿🇲🌾
