The Tamzin Merchant Conundrum

For years in this fandom, I’ve been scratching my head at why so many Dany antis hate on Emilia Clarke and constantly say how much better they would like Dany’s character if she were played by the original actress cast as Daenerys, Tamzin Merchant.

And I think I’ve got it. 

Up until a recent interview, we never really heard much about Merchant on being replaced by Emilia Clarke. It was common knowledge that she had played Dany in the unaired pilot, but we never really heard about her side of things. More still, she never expressed any kind of bitterness at having been replaced or that she regrets that she had been replaced. 

When we did get that interview with Merchant about originally playing Dany in the clusterfuck pilot, she said she could not connect to the character of Dany and that the part didn’t interest her.

Contrast that with Emilia Clarke who dogeared and marked up her copy of AGOT after she had her initial audition and fell so in love with Dany’s character, she used Dany’s strength as inspiration to get herself through two near death experiences. 

It’s so obvious why Dany antis prefer Merchant. They want everyone to hate the character of Daenerys as much as they do, or at least, be indifferent toward her. They don't like the idea of Merchant as Daenerys because they think she would have been a better actress, they think she is prettier (or not prettier) than Emilia Clarke (or Sophie Turner), they think she matches better with the book description of Dany. It’s none of that. 

They just want someone to play that character who they can then project onto their own feelings about Dany. And Emilia doesn't offer that to them. Emilia is the president of the Dany fan club and she is damn proud about it. And antis just can’t stand that one more person in the world disagrees with them and tells them, in not so many words, that they’re wrong.

can i please put out a PSA that writers are not required to create stories for anything other than themselves?? it’s a creative outlet. fanfiction ≠ fan service. if you don’t like how a writer ends a fic, go read a different fic. Dany isn’t required to write what you want, only what she wants. stop harassing fanfiction writers. they don’t owe you anything.
