critical role seems really cool but i have an opinion to say abt the fans
unpopular opinion but critical role isn’t... as special or important as everyone seems to think. if you enjoy it, that’s great! but considering the other players in my dnd groups constantly refer to it, take things from it to use in their campaigns always, and seem to base so much of their dnd stuff around it... it makes me real hesitant to get into it, which, somehow, everyone thinks? less of me for? and less experienced for?
this isnt saying it isnt good- it’s just saying that theres a LOT more to dungeons and dragons than watching a podcast and basing a bunch of stuff around it solely. i’m glad the players have fun in critrole, and im glad people enjoy it, but... maybe please remember that some people don’t like watching that long of a series, and that not using things from that is ok and doesn’t make someone less of a DM.
along with that- not using voices is fine! using only slight variations is fine! people keep saying “if your dm doesnt do voices whats the point” and as a dm who’s honestly ashamed of my voice in general? that sucks. and yes, i’ve seen posts saying that, exactly, and talking down on dms who dont use voices.
basically, don’t base your entire experience with a game around one popular series. enjoy it, yes, but don’t judge people who don’t want to watch it, or follow it, because often you aren’t the kind of player they would want to do that with if you’re judging them for not.
critrole seems super cool and they all seem to enjoy it a lot, which is great! i’m not at all judging it. i’m more just... please don’t think that’s everything about a good session in DnD, because every DM is different, and please don’t judge your DM for not being the same as a famous, professional, paid-for-this DM.
and maybe thank your DMs sometimes. because they aren’t paid for it. they do it in their free time, and especially if you’re a chaotic player who sometimes pushes them, please, a little appreciation goes a long way.
