But on some servers, I won't be able to use a system-wide ruby or rvm ruby because, for some inexplicable reason, the ssh shell won't have the right paths configured. I will get the following error because env can't find the ruby executable.

/usr/bin/env: ruby: No such file or directory

I found a good answer via Stackoverflow, where I enabled PermitUserEnvironment in my sshd configuration. Then, I set up the ssh environment on the user who will be able to run the script by adding or creating a ~/.ssh/environment file, which has:

$ env | grep rvm >> ~/.ssh/environment

And then I double check everything to make sure the environment is correct.

The only argument again enabling PermitUserEnvironment is what if you don't have control over the server? Or you might be exposing executables that user shouldn't need to know -- but I haven't found a way other than doing the above. Maybe a little bit more research is needed.

MySQL Debugging

I am not a database administrator, but you have probably been in those situations where you are forced to do it.  The best situations are when you have total control of the database such as creating the tables, setting up the correct indices, and writing correct queries in away that you get those thousands of records in 1 second.

BUT this isn't an ideal world and we live in a world where we use frameworks and have to use their built in querying systems.  I make use of SHOW PROCESSLIST; and SHOW FULL PROCESSLIST; in mysql.  I also turn on the mysql-slow log and restart my configuration.  My issue with these methods is that it only shows me when the problem STARTS -- and the queries it shows me at those times might be unrelated to the problem.  I find the issues are always writing these huge temporary tables to disk, and my servers I/O is constantly waiting and waiting and waiting. What the hell is going on?

I have heard of Percona Toolkit, and I am going through those binaries to help me find out what is going on... but is there anything else out there?  Yes, I've already run the mysql-tuner.pl script, mysql-tuner-primer, blah blah blah. These scripts gave me hope and then the hope was taken away with the server crashing once again...

So my question to you in the tumblr 'verse is:  what tools do you use to figure out why MySQL is misbehaving?

Change file system permissions to allow file uploads through servers

One of the many requirements I've come across as a developer is the ability to upload files through a web server and I have always run across permissions problems galore.  In many cases I've seen people just change the mode on the directories to globally read and write, and when I see:

-rwxrwxrwx

drwxrwxrwx

I cringe.  Well, I always try to discourage the practice simply because if you're on a shared server, than anyone with a login can edit your files, and these days the more secure you can make your server the better.

The following is what I've learned and have put into practice on several occasions, but you should do your own research on file security and see if its right for you. :)  However, I'm open to new and better ways to do this, so please let me know if you do!

First thing is my machine that I am describing for these instructions uses php-fpm configuration but any other daemon your using for you language will need its startup script modified as well.  On my machine I also have the web server and php5-fpm running in their own user and group combination called www-data.  Also, I typically give each web site its user as well, and in this example I shall call it 'prospero'.

Now, in order to make sure the php server is running in the write permissions, I edited /etc/init.d/php5-fpm start script (which is the location in Ubuntu and I also believe its also in Debian).  In the file, I added one line and modified two.

New line:

UMASK = 002

Modified lines

start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --umask $UMASK --pidfile $PIDFILE --exec $DAEMON --test > /dev/null \ start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --umask $UMASK --pidfile $PIDFILE --exec $DAEMON -- \

Restart the server and the change now makes the start up script set the php5-fpm process to use 002 permissions, which is basically means the owner is www-data and group owner is www-data, such that it can only reads, writes, or executes specifically allowed by that name.

Next, is the folder to which prosper will upload -- there I will need to modify the directory structure with the following:

chmod ug+rws uploads

Only on the folder to which the uploads will take place, and so when you do a list on the directory, you get the following permissions

drwxr-xr-x  6 prospero www-data 4096 . drwsrwsr-x  6 prospero www-data 4096 uploads

What does the 's' mean? You're basically setting the setuid and setgid settings with the read and write permissions belong to the user or group and so anything uploaded to it will be run as if the owner or the group ran it, rather then another user.  The read and write bit should allow our web server to upload anything we want. 

That's it.  Any uploads will keep the owner and the group owner because you set the uid and gid -- but be aware, if your script starts handling the directory structure and you set permissions via its functions, you might change how the directory structure works.
