WW3 Illustrated, 1979-2014 (published by @PMPress, 2015) Founded in 1979 by Seth Tobocman and Peter Kuper, World War 3 Illustrated is a collective of first-time and professional artists who use confrontational comics to breathe a bit of creative dissent into U.S. political discourse. This full-color retrospective exhibition is arranged thematically, and includes topics like housing rights, feminism, the environment, religion, police brutality, globalization, and depictions of conflicts from the Middle East to the Midwest. World War 3 Illustrated provides plenty of next-level insights too, looking at the wars we wage on each other, and the battle of ideas in our own minds. Whether in the comics world or the political art world, the publication is really without rival. Seeing as the collective turns 40 this year it’s impossible to give a synopsis history here so I’ll just share one anecdote. On the second image there is the illustration “Roll up your sleeve, America!” by Art Speigelman, author of the graphic novel Maus. In response to 9/11 and the launch of the U.S. “War on Terror”, Speigelman wanted to publish something that could encourage people to think critically about these wars and what the underlying motives were. Despite being a Pulitzer Prize winning author, not a single publication in America was willing to publish that illustration in 2001 — except WW3. It has provided a home for the work of some of the country’s most influential political artists at one time or another, including Sue Coe, Eric Drooker, Peter Kuper, Spain Rodriguez, Seth Tobocman, Joe Sacco and dozens more. This hardcover volume is a great overview of the first few decades. #sjcomix365 #politicalcomics #radicalcomics #sethtobocman #peterkuper #anticapitalistcomics #susanwillmarth #nicoleschulman #macmcgill #kevinpyle #spainrodriguez #comicsanthology #NYCcomics https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsm3YmFnhRd/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12o6y19tit8b2
