The Seventh Month 1st July 1980||Tilden and Severus

Early Afternoon Brick Lane, Whitechapel, London

After the way the meeting almost a week earlier had gone, and his continued attempts to spy, he was running low on energy. Every little sound made him turn, expecting Aurors bursting through the door or worse, former allies, sent after him now, for not delivering enough information fast enough. 

He needed a break. And the Malfoys’ home wouldn’t work. He needed to be somewhere that the war was not. Unfortunately, there was nowhere left that the war had not touched. But anywhere that had not directly involved him would do. 

Brick lane was suitably Muggle and just far enough from Knockturn and Diagon Alley to serve his purposes. He needed new boots anyway. To keep the pairs separate. To keep one for work and brewing and the other for times when there might be blood. And more and more it seemed there was a lot of that.  

Severus ducked into the small shop and purchased a pair of simple workmans boots, much like his father’s old pair, but new and with softer leather. They’d be no good in a brewing room, anything could eat through them, but they looked like a bit of wax and polish would do a good job protecting them from any more organic spills. The muggle money was so much easier to handle than wizarding, and when he considered the exchange rate, not too expensive either.

He tied the laces together and slung them over his shoulder as he fumbled with his matches, cursing the way the heat was getting into his worn jumper and dark trousers. He hated summer, even in the shade it was warm and there was no question of someone as sallow and pallid as him going into the sunlight proper. 

He managed to get one ready to strike but as his hand moved down the pack, he caught the glued card of the sleeve and the contents of the matchbook spilled onto the floor. Like the straw that broke the camel’s back, Severus unleashed a torrent of anger on the tiny paper box and the scattered matchsticks. “Bastard, cocking crucio fucking-” A string of expletives and legitimate curses left his thin lips as he kicked the pavement, scuffing the edge of his older dragonhide brewers boots slightly. At the sound of indrawn breath nearby he wheeled around one hand thrust towards his waistband where his wand was tucked, rage twisting his thin lips into an unpleasant sneer, “What. Do. You. Want? Sod off.”
