What Do You See? (#76)
Choose 4 things within 4 feet of you and write for 4 minutes. One sentence each. <><><><><> An old Western that we have seen before is playing on television. 📺 The dishes are done, and the kitchen floor has been swept; if I could only figure out how to keep the cats from leaving kibble in their wake.🧹 The box that my new sneakers came in has yet to make it to the recycle bin. 👟 One of my…

Okay, so, “summer haze” is not what it was. This wasn’t the haze that came with the constant heat of the season mixed with fun with her friends.
No.
This was something darker.
The haze cleared slowly, and she realized that she was in a hospital room. The walls a glaring white, the bed linens only slightly darker, and the dressing gown she was in a similar color but with some sort of pattern.
There was no one in the room with her. Blinking blearily, she tried to sit up, pressing the call button at the same time.
A nurse came in, looking slightly confused until she saw the teenager sitting up in bed. “Oh no; you need to lay down.”
Just as she was being resituated, her mother walked into the room. “Oh, sweetheart, you’re alright!”
“Thea? Mariee? Taylor? Gina?” she asked, voice raspy. “Are they okay?”
Blue eyes dulled considerably; her mother took a careful step back before sitting in the chair by the bed. “Thea’s alright—she woke up just a couple hours before you.”
“The others?” When no immediate response came she struggled to sit up again. “Mom, please tell me that they’re alright.”
“I’m sorry, baby girl.” Voice low, eyes focused-but-not-really on the floor. “They didn’t make it.”
And then the haze was gone entirely. Nothing to block out the reality, nothing to hide behind. Just an endless repetition.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.
The words moving through her mind, slow as molasses but faster than a racecar at the same time.
Dead.
Dead.
Dead.
The haze came back as her world slowly faded to black.

Forgot to mention this in the question I answered, but it's more appropriate as a separate post anyway. Thank you so much to everyone who is following me. I can't believe how many notes and followers I was getting even while I was on hiatus. This is ridiculous. You guys are crazy. And I love you all in the most non-romantic, platonic, demisexual way.
