majnun laila poem and severinlaila ;)

okay so we all kind of broke a little when we found out laila chose to call severin majnun, not because hes mad at times (mfkr said godhood in my veinS) but bc of a tragic poem made long before ‘romeo and juliet’ was anything. 

before i make connections between our dear sev and laila and the poem i want to explain the story of the poem for those who dont know it: 

laila and majnun is an old story (originated in arabia) about a poet named qays and his love laila. im gonna give a 5-yr-old explanation as to what happened to the two of them and why the poem isnt called laila and qays. 

qays fell in love with laila but she had to marry another man and qays went insane and left to the desert where he wrote poems ab her. :D

^however the the poem ‘laila and majnun’ by nizami ganjavi tells the story with more depth and im sure he modified a few things and it goes like this: 

qays fell in love with laila and it didnt go unrequited bc laila had also loved him. qays wrote poetry ab her and it was very obvious how ‘crazily’* and ‘mad’* in love he was. 

when laila asked him to ask her father for her hand, qays goes to do so then gets rejected due to how hes gone crazy in love. so crazy that the village called him majnun for such a long time theyd forgotten his name ‘qays’ 

*(majnun ; مجنون means * crazy, insane, mad, as an adjective. but as a noun: madman.) 

laila was forced to marry another man and she dies bc of her love for qays/majnun and is buried in her wedding dress. and once majnun learns of her death and visits her and dies at her grave. 

now.. i want to make a point so small but i find it crucial. this poem is titled laila and majnun in english and in persian its also ‘لیلی و مجنون’ (laila and majnun) BUT in arabic its مجنون ليلى which as you can see there no (و) (and), the arabic and persian alphabet are the same therefore i can understand the persian title as an arab person but the deletion of (and) adds more meaning bc the arabic title means: laila’s madman. not laila and madman, no theres posession here. 

he’s no ones madman but lailas. he is a madman over and for laila.
