That, or it only describes ones talent. As in, the activity that their mental and physical properties are the most suitable for. Or complete lack of free will, of course. That could be it too.
Interesting angle. Also, if you'd look at Rarity: her cutiemark is a set of diamonds, yet she's a professional tailor. I suppose there are many other things you'd be able to do with a diamond cutiemark, an obvious one being gemmologist - so your cutiemark doesn't force you into a one-way road.
