Or do you want to stop this?” She put the glass back on the table and looked at him, stricken, still struggling with the fact that he’d thought about ending their meetings. He lowered his eyes and grimaced. “No, I … want to continue.” “Are you sure?” she probed. “Yes!” Severus growled. “Just don't expect me to do it happily.” Hermione snorted. “I don't expect you to do anything happily.”

Just worked through my beta's notes for a chapter of the next long story I plan to publish and since I'm toying with the thought of posting the first chapter on Severus's birthday again I thought it might be the right time to talk about the story a bit.

So, may I present to you...

'Medicus' is in fact a series consisting of three stories, two shorter first parts and a huge third part. The third part wasn't planned to become so big but we'll get to that later.

I wrote the first part of 'Medicus' channelling my House M.D. excitement. Severus and House are just so similar characters and I've always had a thing for medical drama so I thought I needed to write a medical Hogwarts drama and make Severus House. ^^ It is very obvious in that part where I was coming from. Minerva has huge Cuddy vibes, Severus doesn't give a damn about rules, and he repeatedly threatens Hermione with her death if she doesn't tell him the truth. Despite her problem turning out to be a rather serious one, I think the first chapters are rather amusing, at least when you're familiar with House M.D.

The second part, taking place ten years later, is much more serious and emotionally taxing. I don't want to spoiler too much already but Hermione's mother is the patient in that part and the Statute of Secrecy leads Hermione to break the law - and Severus to support her eventually.

I've always planned to make this series a three-part thing and already had plans for what the third part was supposed to be about but shortly after finishing part two my mental health declined due to real-life bullshit and I ended up not writing any fanfiction for about seven years. I was so caught up with my mental stuff that there was no space to even think about fanfiction. I didn't even write anything else apart from my diary. I just didn't have any words left to spare for fics while I was grappling with my own problems.

Anyway, when I finally returned to fanfiction, ironically due to more real-life struggle that hit me so unexpectedly that I needed to flee the whole thing so urgently, I had other things to write about than the plan I'd originally come up with for part three. During my time of meandering between therapy and rehab and ergotherapy and forums and more therapy, I'd met people and heard stories and learned a thing or two about how the human psyche works and I had to put all of that somewhere. So I dumped it onto Severus's shoulders, as you do. ^^

Initially, I still planned to make part three as short as the first two parts. I wanted to stick to that scheme, satisfy my inner Sheldon, that kind of thing. But reaching the chapter that would have to be the last one I realised I couldn't end it there. I had so much more to tell, so many thoughts to write down, so many scenes to paint. I couldn't end it there and be done with it.

So I abandoned my initial plan and went for it.

The story turned out to be the hardest one to write for me ever. I wrote it trembling, my hands ice-cold and my cheeks glowing, replaying the scenes before falling asleep over and over again, churning out chapter after chapter. The story has more than 200k and I wrote it in about a month. It really wanted to be told...

And I really needed to tell it. Although my mental health bullshit has nothing to do with trauma, that's a topic I encountered a lot during my time in forums and clinics so that's what part three focuses on. It goes deep into childhood trauma, flashbacks, panic attacks, and something resembling therapy although neither Hermione nor Severus are therapists. It's a story about being broken and trying to heal from there, it is a story about trust and bonding, about finding love where it wasn't supposed to be but it's not a romance. Yet love is everywhere in this story, especially where it hurts the most.

'Medicus' will always have a special place in my heart because it helped me process a very hard time in my life. And it will always have a special place in my heart because it is the softest, gentlest, purest kind of love I've ever written. I love the end to bits, I'm sure I'll never write an end as perfect as that ever again, and yet I'm sure it won't be for everyone. ^^ But that doesn't matter. Of all my stories this is the one that's the most personal, the most mine.
