2021 Sewing Plans: May Check-In, Pt. 1
links to are to inspiration pics, finished projects, and patterns used
Below is everything I'm supposed to have made by now, with the things I've actually made crossed off :
Bedgown/Adrienne - pattern TBD
Shift - self-drafted
All Well Cardigan
Seamwork Kenzie Skirt: altered to work like an 18th C. petticoat
Seamwork Willis Shirt
Long-Sleeve Band Collar Shirt - pattern TBD
Seamwork Nolan Pants
Thimble and Plume Wulsthaube to go under my current headwraps
Bum Pad - self-drafted
1780s or 1790s stays - pattern TBD
Easter/Pentecost Special Occasion Outfit
3 out of 11. Wow.
I have to remember that I *knew* I would have some setbacks, which is why I don't have plans for the last half of the year. I knew I would need this time to catch up.
What have I actually made so far?
1 Jacket, but I didn't use the All Well Cardigan
1 Petticoat, but I didn't use the Seamwork pattern, though I did follow along somewhat with the Burnley & Trowbridge tutorial (see a theme emerging?)
2 Gathered Midi Skirts, following Rosery Apparel's tutorial (these are my pride and joy)
1 Seamwork Akita Top
1 House dress where I tested making a super simplified version of the Watteau pleats I need to practice to execute my historical costuming dream project: a mustard yellow casaquin / adrienne / contouche and matching quilted petticoat
2 stuffed bunnies for baptism and 1st birthday gifts (sadly no pics for these)
I did end up making the Special Occasion Outfit hence the unplanned Akita Top and the second Gathered Midi Skirt! I used a beautiful peachy linen that I will also be using to make a robe that will suffice for the Bedgown on my list. Speaking of which...
What have I learned about my creative process so far?
I will - without fail - get sidetracked by unplanned projects and change my mind about the project itself in the middle making it slowing my progress to a crawl
I need to include the time and energy it takes to make mockups in my mental and handwritten planning for any project that is large or that I want to come out perfectly
Having an unmovable event assigned to a project is the most reliable way to keep myself on track
I really need to get in the habit of clearing my sewing table after each project; half of my slow down comes from getting to the point of not being able to work and just letting stuff sit on my sewing table for weeks.
What am I working on now?
So I have reapproached the Bedgown project AND the Seamwork Nolan Pants. More on that in Part 2!
MASKS ARE HERE! That’s right, I’ve converted my BigCartel shop into an all masks all the time party. All masks will be made-to-order with 100% cotton. You choose your fabric, style (pleated/fitted) and either elastic loops or fabric ties. Every mask comes with a nose-wire and a pocket for a filter. There are LOTS of color and pattern options (including some solids!) plus lots more information about sizing and pick-up options for those of you local to Madison, WI. Not seeing exactly what you’re looking for? I’m happy to do custom orders! Shoot me a message via the shop and let’s chat. I made these rad fabric trays (perfect for dice, keys, etc) but they are the largest things I will have in my shop so I need to find a way to photograph them nicely 🙃 I don’t have a bunch of clear and pretty surfaces at my house 😂 anyway! These will be listed soon, in small and large! They close and open with snaps on the corners and fold up nicely if you’re taking them to a game session! Dat ass! Yes, I just said that about my own ass. SELF LOVE IS A BEAUTIFUL THING. I had a blast working on a shoot for @steerqueeryall and @glittergrandpa today! Follow them on IG and get yourself some custom boxers! #Repost @glittergrandpa ・・・ This is very serious work we are doing here. I bought this shirt in the lead up to Pride loving how it cleverly established “babes” as a non-gendered descriptor and challenged the gender binary. But every time I wear it, I also love the reminder to challenge binaries ~everywhere~. Binary thinking pits one thought against another and excludes the possibility of other options. It’s insidious and ubiquitous. Think about the idea of “good”. Binary thinking has us also immediately thinking about “bad” and assuming it’s the opposite. If something isn’t one, its the other. Binary thinking is inherently exclusionary (no muddled middle ground) and inevitably leads to hierarchies. Hierarchies lead to supremacy... see where I’m going with this? Today’s the Fourth of July and to say that I have mixed feelings about my country would be a hell of an understatement. So I’m wearing this shirt today to remind myself that it’s okay to have mixed feelings. I can hate and love my country at the same time. I can be ashamed of broad swathes of our history and be immensely proud of others. I can love the shit out of the USWN soccer team and fucking loathe our state sanctioned concentration camps. These things do not cancel each other out, they are not paradoxes: they are truths. I’m wearing this shirt today to remind myself that Activism isn’t a yes or no, a succeed or fail. It’s a question of scale and dedication and daily practice. All progress is progress. / / / Also I made these shorts this week. Fabric is Michael Miller cotton/linen and the pockets are IKEA fabric I bought circa 2009 with confused looking birds on it. Bonus points for the highlighter yellow zipper because why even make your own clothes if they can’t be ridiculous? 😘 #icontainmultitudes #sodoesmywardrobe #babesagainstthebinary #bonfireshirts #sewqueer #maritimeshorts #independencedayramble #memade #memadewardrobe https://www.instagram.com/p/BzgMq1PhD7G/?igshid=sbyvfk29dipb
