The Logic of the Malivore Effect

If you really think about what we’ve been shown of the aftermath of someone going into Malivore, you start to find inconsistencies in how the Malivore Effect is presented to the viewer.

I will grant that we only have three examples of first hand alterations. Most of our examples are just people believing that a supernatural species never existed because likely centuries ago they were eliminated from the collective unconscious (something that was being mispronounced as collective conscience all season btw).

However, those three examples seem to contradict each other in some pretty obvious ways.

Our first example is Oliver and the Dryads. I think it was supposed to be clear that the blooming that Oliver had witnessed every Spring was at the hand of the Dryad, but, while he does remember the bloom, he doesn’t remember the Dryad. This could of course just mean that it was something they experienced together and it was something that continued to happen and he continued to witness after the Dryad were gone, but we get very little other information about his side of this experience.

Our next example is Seylah. When she gets erased Alaric loses memories of the entire trip including the bits before he even knew that Landon had met Seylah. He says that he doesn’t remember how they found Landon, he doesn’t remember doing any of the stuff that Hope tells him that they did on that trip, and it is confirmed in “There’s a Mummy on Main Street” that he doesn’t remember Agent Clarke (though, since Agent Clarke calls Hope “Jessica”, it is clear that Agent Clarke remembers them) and at least some of that stuff would not necessarily require Alaric to remember Seylah.

Similarly, them remembering why they were in Fort Valley at the end of the episode could easily be explained sans Seylah the be them chasing the monster with the urn (which they were) and did not require them to completely block it out without Seylah’s memory.

It’s actually not even clear how much time Landon lost as he never gives an event indicator for his last memory before the blank spot and we know that he had been visiting Seylah’s work for a while before he actually approached her.

Finally, our third example of a Malivore erasure. I’m just going to start this off with a sum up of how much of the other characters’ lives involved Hope being around. The twins have had Hope pretty prominently in their lives in one way or another since they were four if I’m not mistaken. Alaric has been taking care of her for about that long. Landon (and to a lesser extent Rafael) has no experiences of the Salvatore School that do not in some way include Hope and he seemed to be pretty focused on her when he knew her before he went to the school too.

So going by the “we lost memories of at least the entire two days we knew Seylah even the parts before we met her” logic that our previous solid example gave us; 1)Landon shouldn’t remember the Salvatore School and the Salvatore shouldn’t remember Landon. 2)The twins and Alaric should be missing years of their lives. 3)Honestly, anyone who went to the Salvatore School and anyone who lived in New Orleans in the 15 years before Klaus died should just be completely confused about where the hell they are. The students should probably all be reverting to their pre-teen memories. No one should know that Klaus is dead.

Instead, Landon and Alaric clearly know each other and the only question the students have is why there is a fifth voting tile. I mean, we get a little evidence that they might have zoned out for a minute or two while their memories were erased (Josie letting the match burn down in her fingers), but nothing to the degree of losing all the days that they spent with Hope.

I can see how this would have been problematic from a storytelling perspective, but it would have worked just fine if the writers had just taken the time to think it through when they were first showing us what an erasure was like. If Alaric and Landon remembered the artifact and the monster and chasing the monster, and Agent Clarke but just didn’t remember Seylah’s involvement.

I find myself insanely interested in Legacies’ newest plot twists, particularly connected to Seylah’s past.

Right now, my pet theory is that:

1. Landon’s father (a supernatural being) smuggled her out of Malivore. 2. They had a brief fling after getting out. Maybe Big Bad wanted a child, maybe he wanted intel, whatever his intention was, it led to Landon. 3. At some point he threw himself back into work, which literally means going back to Malivore. There could be many reasons for it, but hiding his presence from Seylah could’ve been one of them. 4. When he went in, Seylah forgot about his existence, that’s why she doesn't remember getting pregnant.

It’s quite telling that the state she found herself in after ‘getting out’ is similar to Hope’s (& Alaric’s & Landon’s) right after Seylah erased herself from existence. 

I woke up in the middle of nowhere, covered in mud, absolutely no idea how I got there.

But I don't think we're in Kansas anymore.

It took how many seasons? But Seylah is back. Hopefully her being back is so that Landon can get closure and to say goodbye to her. And maybe get a few answers as well(okay I know I'm clowning about the answers part lol)
