I see a lot of people sharing this picture, but I have an update!
This was taken in 1993. It was the chorus’s 15th anniversary, who had lost 115 members to HIV/AIDS. Last year, for the chorus’s 40th anniversary, they took a new picture:
There are 298 singers on-stage. Each man turned around represents a chorus member who was lost - not all to HIV/AIDS, many to suicide, violence, or in one case literally onstage during a concert. In 1993, there were only 7 more people in the chorus than had been lost. In 2018, there were only 8 more people.
Before every concert, we pass around the names of members who have been lost and literally carry them with us on-stage. Each of us sing for two - ourselves, and our brother in our pocket who couldn’t physically be there with us.
