did you get to met kolton?!
omg I just saw this i'm sorry!!!
Yes, I did! I volunteered with a convention in St. John's, NL called "Sci Fi on the Rock" last Saturday and Sunday and he was one of the guests there. Because I was volunteering all day both days, I didn't get to go to either of his panels. And I have literally zero dollars so I couldn't pay for a signature or a selfie. But I got to chat with him a little bit.
Saturday morning, before everything started (this won't be the exact wordings but i'm pretty sure i remember it fairly well):
Him: Hi, I'm Kolton.
Me: I knoww.. 🙈
He laughed.
Me: I wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed your portrayal of Carter Vaughn. You made him a ray of sunshine.
Him: Aw, thank you. That means a lot. Yeah, I've been surprised by how much people connected with the character.
Another volunteer: Ray of sunshine, what a nice compliment!
Him: I think most of the characters I've played have been kind of like that. I'd like to play a villain.
Me: You have lots of time.
Him: True.
Me: You're currently working on "Unicorn Academy"?
Him: Yeah, I've been doing that for about 5 years now. It's different, doing animation, but it's a lot of fun.
Me: How have you found voice acting to be different from acting, like, in person?
Him: I guess you have to work harder to put more inflection in your voice. But I really enjoy it. I have a recording studio in my house so I can work from home.
Me: Oh, nice!
Him: And I really enjoy the musical aspect of it.
Me: Aw, that's great.
Him: Have you seen it?
Me: Nooooo...it's on the list.
Him: Well, it is a kids show, so I get it.
Me: I did see "Locke & Key". That was great.
Him: Yeah, that was such a good show! It's too bad they cancelled it.
Me: I knoww.
Him: It seems like a lot more people have been getting into "Locke & Key" recently. I don't know why. Maybe it's just Netflix, or...
Me: Or maybe they're just looking for stuff that you were in.
Him: Aw, haha, thank you. But yeah, that was fun. [I can't remember exactly what he said next, or how we got to the next part of the conversation. Something about why he chooses certain roles or what attracts him to certain projects, maybe?] ...With "Heated Rivalry", I just wanted to be involved because of who was making it, and it was a really good experience. I can't believe how much it blew up, and the response I've gotten.
Me: Like I said, ray of sunshine! The ice cream scene at the Olympics? Hilarious.
Him: Haha yeah, that was funny.
Me: I read that Jacob told you to deliver the line like you had a lesbian sister?
Him: Yeah, like I was familiar with the community.
Me: Amazing.
Me: I also saw "Sneakerella." That was super fun.
Him: Woww, thank you. That's a deep cut. That's a deep cut.
Me: I will watch all the Cinderella story movies.
Him: Are you a big Disney fan?
Me: I guess. I'm a millenial so I grew up with it.
Him: What's your favourite Disney movie?
Me (way too quickly): Mulan. You?
Him: Hmm..probably Lion King.
Me: Classic.
Me: I also like the "weird" ones like Atlantic, Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet...
Him: Yeah. Oh..that one, "Coco." Is that Disney?
Me: Yeah, it is! Their recent stuff is really good, too. Moana. Encanto!! I looooved Encanto.
Him: Oh yeah, that was so good. So good.
Him: You're volunteering here this weekend?
Me: Yeah, with one of the exhibitors. My friend asked me to help out. It's a group of Star Wars cosplayers who dress up as bad guys and raise money for charity. The charity we're raising money for is called the Tetra Society (you're gonna get the whole spiel now) which pairs engineers with people who have disabilities and the engineers work one-on-one with the clients to come up with a one-of-a-kind accessibility solution to improve their quality of life.
Him: Oh, that's really cool. I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies.
Me: Really?
Him: Yeah, and now it's been so long that it's really intimidating. I really should watch them, though. I really liked the Harry Potter movies.
Me: Ah yeah, I used to love Harry Potter. But then Joanne Kathleen ruined it.
Him: Yeah, true. I guess because I didn't read the books, I only watched the movies, I'm able to separate it more.
Me: I do have a lot of respect for the actors who were in those movies, like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. They seem like amazing people.
Him: Yeah, I love Daniel Radliffe's stuff.
Me: Are you a big movie person?
Him: Not really. I think I'm more of a TV show guy.
Me: What's your favourite TV show?
Him: Probably Breaking Bad.
Me: Fair.
Me: Oh, I see some other fans waiting to meet you, so I will let you get to it. Nice to meet you!
Him: Nice to meet you!
Sunday evening, as things were winding down:
Me: So....this is very silly.
Him: Okay.
Me: You know how friendship bracelets have become, like, a Thing? In the fandom?
Him: Yup.
Me: This is for you.
I gave him a beaded bracelet with the word "Vaughnny" on it. He looked at it and then immediately put it on his wrist.
Him: Wow! That's so cool! Thank you! I love this. This means a lot. Did you make this like, last night?
Me: Yeah.... [actually I had made it that same afternoon, sitting at the exhibitor's table where I was volunteering.] I had already made some for myself, and I was like, "I gotta."
Him: I love it. Thank you so much. I'm gonna be wearing it for the rest of the day. For the next like, four days.
Me: *smiles like a fuckin dork*
Him: Are you from here?
Me: Yep.
Him: Cool. I love it here. This has been really fun.
Me: So you had a good weekend? [one of the other volunteers told me that this was the first con he had ever done.]
Him: Yeah, definitely. I'm excited to go home, though.
Me: Of course. Sorry, where's home for you?
Him: Stratford, Ontario.
Me: Oh yeah, I was there, once. Everything in all the tourist shops is Justin Bieber or Shakespeare. [Justin Bieber is from Stratford, Ontario. Shakespeare is from Stratford Upon Avon in the UK.]
Him: Yeah, that's the one. The theatre there is really great.
Me: Is that how you got into acting?
Him: Yeah, yeah, that's definitely part of it.
At this point, I realized that I was going to be late for the bus, so I had to skedaddle.
Him: *touching the bracelet on his wrist* Thank you again for this.
Me: Of course! A lot of people really love the character you created. I'm sure you know that, you don't need me to tell you that! But yeah.
Him: Thank you.
Me: Okay byee!
Him: See ya!
I don't have any social media accounts other than tumblr so I only learned AFTERWARDS that his HIS DAUGHTER, HIS FIRST CHILD, was born on April 3rd, literally just three weeks prior????? I felt so bad that I didn't know beforehand! I should have congratulated him and asked him how he was coping with sleep deprivation, and how his wife is recovering! Ugh, I felt so guilty :( Bad KRB. Lesson learned: always creep celebrities on Instagram BEFOREHAND so you know about any recent major events in their lives.
Anyway, yeah, overall it was nice! He was very pleasant. He's a lil cutie. I was a little embarassed giving him the bracelet, but I was so broke that I couldn't show my support in any other way, so I wanted to give him a little tiny something. I felt like I would never have forgiven myself if I didn't do it.
