Top 5 Stargate SG-1 episodes? Top five Stargate character moments/interactions? Top 5 headcanons?
Thank you for this! I’m sorry it took so long--I wanted to do it justice and so it got put on hold--but here it is! I am DELIGHTED to talk about Stargate, that’s always a fun time.
Eps (with a disclaimer that these are my "first five faves that come to mind WITHOUT looking at a list" rather than an absolute ranking, because I couldn't actually choose just five from all ten seasons!):
"Need" Aside from the obvious whump aspects, I just feel like... this is the episode where Daniel "attachment issues" Jackson really GETS that people are here for him unconditionally. He hits rock bottom and is at his most unloveable and what does Jack do when he sees that? He hugs him. I love it.
"Window of Opportunity" It is just a perfect Groundhog Day episode. That's all there is to it. (...Except actually that's NOT all there is to it, because it also turns on a dime from funny to heartwrenching at the end. Ugh, I need to rewatch the whole thing.)
"200" Another in the comedy section, because this is just nonstop. They crammed so many brilliant self-parodies and sketches into one episode. (Also it's a S10 episode with Jack, which makes it a win automatically.)
"Memento Mori"--I feel like with more thought I might not put two S10 eps in my top five list, but this is a standout for me. I feel like Vala and Daniel had some very similar issues under their very different exteriors, and this...this is kind of her "Need". This is the one where she learns she doesn't have to keep running, and Daniel is the one that shows her that. (And I'm also a Daniel/Vala fan, so there's that.)
"Changeling" Teal'c-centric episode! Episode that takes place inside Teal'c's mind! S6 Daniel appearance! Teal'c's love for Bra'tac! Just an amazing episode all around.
But there are so many other good ones... 1969! The Keeper! So many others! I am regretting half of this list already, but I'd also regret taking anything off. :P
Moments/Interactions (same disclaimer as above, with the addition that I’m focusing on ones that are funny in some way because SG-1 has such good humor):
That one in the "Space Race" ep where Teal'c lies and says he's committed to helping Sam to get out of a tour and she goes with it, and then after the others are gone he says "I am in your debt, Major Carter" and she goes "Indeed" and they're both just grinning at each other. Love Sam & Teal'c moments.
There are, of course, so many Jack & Daniel moments, but I think I'll go with the elevator scene in the S6 finale right now. Daniel jumping into business and Jack rebuking him and Daniel going with it and doing a "reset"on the whole conversation... Their dynamic is just beautiful.
"Undomesticated equines could not remove me, O'Neill." I love this because A) it's the first time someone realizes Teal'c is making a joke; B) it basically tells us that his other "botched" idioms were him trolling all along; C) Teal'c is both affirming his support and trying to distract Jack from his pain by making the joke more obvious; and D) it WORKS. Jack is blown away by the fact that Teal'c is joking. I love them.
The bit in... “Upgrades”, I think? the one with the bracelets that give the Tau’ri SG-1 members superpowers. Anyway, the bit where they go to the steakhouse and order like four steaks apiece with all the trimmings... and at the end of Sam’s order, with all the steaks and baked potatoes and so on and so forth, she finishes with “...and a Diet Coke.” and there’s just this beat as Jack and Daniel stare at her, and she goes defensively “I like the taste!!” CLASSIC.
I dislike a fair number of things about Moebius, but Jack repeatedly asking to time-travel to the 1908 World Series is PEAK Cubs fan representation and as a Cubs fan myself, I love to see it.
Headcanons (I forget what I've already said but hopefully there aren't many repeats here):
I headcanon that Sam introduced Teal'c to Star Trek and Star Wars, as a way to bond with him when he couldn't leave the base. He picked up the deadpan idiom-butchering from Spock because he thought it was funny, and when he brought the SW movies to Sam's house it's because she brought them to him before, one time when he was stuck on base with nothing to do for three days.
Related: part of the reason Teal'c likes Star Wars so much is that he sees himself in Darth Vader. Tell me I'm wrong here.
One time Jack was pushed ESPECIALLY far into Dad Mode with his team and felt the need to full-name Daniel, but Daniel doesn't have a middle name so he yelled "Daniel Lazarus Jackson!" for Effect. Daniel's middle name being Lazarus is an SGC joke now.
Since King Arthur is real in this universe that means Jack is King Arthur and the team are his Round Table. I can’t tell you exactly how this is, but I can’t imagine this reality’s Arthur being anyone else. (Also if you look on Wikipedia, the earliest Arthurian stories have a lot in common with Stargate adventures. I’m just sayin’.)
Jack and Sara get back together some time post-series, because I want them to.
