Hey, I was just wondering if you minded if I asked what your opinion on the Daniel/Vala relationship was? Cause I found it to be extremely problematic and borderline abusive behaviour from Daniel's side and I was just curious what your thoughts were on that since you know Stargate is a problematic show.

Hey, anon!  Of course I don’t mind!

Basically, I agree with you.  I never liked Daniel or the way he treated Vala.  It does have some semblance of an abusive relationship, the getting-together scene from Unending made me so uncomfortable, and it’s just the fact that he was never ever nice to her but constantly criticised her and shut her down, I swear to God he didn’t even smile at her once in all three years of their knowing each other.

I also don’t think Claudia Black and Michael Skanks had much chemistry - except maaaaybe in Prometheus Unbound, and then it was that slap-slap-kiss kind of chemistry that can be fun to watch for half and hour but doesn’t lead into a healthy relationship, from my perspective at least.  

What I would have wanted for Vala, well I posted a lot of Vala/Cam and Vala/Sam things in 2014 and I still like those ships, but she’s lived a life where all of her romantic relationships and other relationships have been about manipulation for personal gain on both sides, so it would have been great if she’d just stayed single and learnt to appreciate the unconditional friendship that (some of) the SG-1 team offered her.  What I wanted for Daniel, well I have heaps of mutuals who love him and I’m sorry for this, but I would have been content for him to stay dead tbh :/

That's what sucks about Stargate man, it's totally everything you said it is but I do love it so. It's the problematic fave. I can't help it. There are a couple of redeeming qualities imo, but they screwed poor Vala over so bad by turning Daniel Jackson into an abusive jackass and making everyone a huge jerk to her that I can no longer deny its disgusting extreme misogyny. Same with Sam and Jack tbh. If they'd just left out the fucking romantic relationships it could've been a bit better.

*sighs* Yeah I’m with you on all of that anon!  I can’t say I love Stargate but I can understand why people do.  The set up is so great, like the concept of ancient mythology meets the age of space travel is fantastic but *sigh* I do hate that the female characters and non-white characters get treated like second class citizens.  And yeah they really don’t do romance well (although that can be said about Trek a lot of the time too lbr)

Oh that’s interesting! I really don’t know what to think about Universe because it’s just never on my dash and I almost never see anyone talk about it but then it has Ming-Na Wen in it so how bad can it be, really?

I was so pleased to have a Hawaiian on mainland television (I didn’t get into the show until friends convinced me after the first season) that I probably overlooked a lot of things. But I do think he character development was better and there’s a lot of story lines involving how much they should get involved in local politics and whether they massively screwed up the universe by interfering. Even the bad guys who essentially grow humans as cattle have some dimension. (And you get bonus Amanda Tapping, who gets great moments.)

I will warn you that if you do like it, you should take a pause between the fourth and fifth seasons and develop your own ending in your head before proceeding. The show got cancelled unexpectedly and the last season’s plotline is weak at best. They also expected the have two movies that didn’t happen.

That’s really helpful advice, I’ll make sure I keep that in mind when I watch it.  The bit about the local politics etc sounds very appealing to me, I always thought SG-1 would have been better if they’d had a prime directive or any consistent principles really, especially considering they interfere with the sovereignty of other planets every other episode.

I haven't watched Stargate that recently but I did really love both SG-1 & Atlantis. I don't remember disliking any of the characters really, which probably helped my enjoyment of the show. I wasn't crazy about the Ori plot-line. It was Universe that I struggled with because the characters were just not as likable to me.

Yeah, I can understand not liking the Ori as a villain.  I haven’t seen Atlantis or Universe yet but I think SG-1 is the kind of show I might have enjoyed more if I’d watched it before getting to know the social justice community and becoming aware of things like the Bechdel test and representation of people of colour because SG-1 fails TERRIBLY on pretty much every point.  So while the Ori weren’t perfect I hated the concept of the Goa’uld far more because while the focus was on the Goa’uld the writers made pretty much every POC on the show evil and every white character good.  To be honest, I found Stargate SG-1 very difficult to watch for that reason and much more offensive than it was enjoyable.

if you don't mind me asking why don't you like daniel?

I don’t mind at all anon!  I was just talking about this with @janetfraiser​ actually.  It started out with me not liking the way he treats Vala, especially that scene in Unending where he makes her cry (to put it in context, I only started watching sg-1 for Claudia Black and Vala and started with seasons nine and ten).  But even when I went back to watch the first eight seasons he never really appealed to me.  He always seems to be in a bad mood, he never looks happy or interested.  Does he ever even smile?

It’s hard to describe, but for me when he’s sarcastic (which is like 90% of the time), it’s not the kind of sarcasm that’s amusing, it’s the kind of sarcasm that turns the social atmosphere really sour and bitter.  You know like when you’re talking to someone and you’re trying to be really positive so that everyone’s comfortable and they shut you down at every opportunity with negativity?  That’s the kind of person Daniel reminds me of.

I also don’t find him at all convincing as an anthropologist, I guess that’s more the writers’ fault though.

I just get bitter about Stargate a lot because I feel like everything revolves around Jack and Daniel, and the writers forget Sam and Teal’c exist half the time because I guess they’re just the kind of people who don’t really acknowledge the existence of anyone who’s not a white cishet male.  And in my opinion Amanda Tapping and Chris Judge are EASILY the MVPs of the Stargate cast (for the first eight seasons obviously :P) so it’s really hard to watch Jack and Daniel get all the attention from both the writers and some parts of the fandom.
