Sherlock Holmes Museum - My thoughts
Okay so I visited the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London and I promised I would post about my experience there.
🔎As a Sherlock Holmes fanatic (addict really) you know I will watch every movie, go see every play and pay for every museum/exhibition, but why is this so expensive?
🔎One of the things that I really wanted to figure out is who is it for? Is it for me? Is it for the casual fans? The readers? People who liked the adaptations? Do they want to appeal to as many people as possible? And let me tell you, I have no idea. The guide there had a memorized little speech about the basics. And that contained stuff that sounds absolutely amazing but not 100% true. But then when I talked to him, he seemed quite knowledgeable on the topic. So were those inaccuracies sacrifices at the altar of keeping things casual and surface level? Because obviously you can’t discuss this behemoth of a canon in 10 minutes.
🔎Why do I have to leave before the next group comes?? Why can’t I read all the text that’s on the wall, especially in the room dedicated to adaptations. Or maybe other people can read faster/aren’t as mesmerized as me. I don’t know. The whooole time, I felt rushed which really made me frsutrated. You’d want your visitors to be engaged. BeCaUsE tHe NeXt GrOuP iS cOmInG uP sHoRtLy. Let me read everything!!
🔎The gift shop is so ducking expensive. But whatever.
🔎The Holmesian Game or the Holmesian societies were never mentioned. But I think that that’s again a result of wanting to keep things superficial. (Superficial for me, it might not be for people who aren’t… knee deep into Sherlock) Telling me that maybe in depth education isn’t the main focus.

🔎there wasn’t that much “meta” text. there weren’t signs telling you whether you can touch something or not? can i turn the pages in the books that are on display? (i really liked the one about bees!) in the first picture, behind the busts, there are coats and hats. can you try them on? i have absolutely no idea!
🔎the room that is supposed to be Mrs Hudson’s room is meh? why is that there? is it for the general Victorian ambiance? because Mrs Hudson “needs” a room in the museum? but she doesn’t have a bed. but then also. why is that room so empty?
🕵🏻 All in all: I will always buy/see/visit anything Sherlock Holmes related but won’t pretend they are perfect. Because this -to me- wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I had the childish amazement on my face and in my heart the whole time (about 30 mins!) but intellectually I was a but disappointed.
